MEN'S HOCKEY ROUNDUP: Gaels sweep No. 7 Lancers
York 1 @ UQTR 4
A slow start handicapped the York University Lions men's hockey team Friday (Nov. 22), as the squad dropped a 4-1 decision to the UQTR Patriotes in Trois-Rivieres, Que.
The loss has the Lions sitting at 7-6-0 on the year, while the Patriotes improved to 8-4-0 with the victory.
A solid all-around team effort from UQTR had the Lions on their heels from the drop of the first puck, as an uncharacteristically slow start by the Lions saw the squad outshot 14-7 in the frame. The period would remain scoreless however, as a stellar effort from goaltender Andrew Perugini (King City, Ont.) had the Patriotes unable to get on the scoreboard. Perugini would finish with 40 saves in the contest.
Surging back offensively in the second, the Lions focused on getting the puck to the net. The result was a 19-shot performance, which ultimately fell short however, as York was unable to convert on a single shot. Marc-Antoine Gelinas (St-Etienne-de-Lauzon, Que.) stood on his head throughout the contest, making 35 saves on 36 shots.
And the offensive focus cost the Lions defensively, as UQTR was finally able to sneak a couple goals past Perugini. Tommy Tremblay (La Tuque, Que.) and Anthony Verret (Roven, France )was among the goal scorers, notching his fifth of the season.
The Patriotes retained a 2-0 lead going into the final frame.
The third period saw each team grind it out for nearly fifteen minutes, until York captain and leading scorer Jesse Messier (Keswick, Ont.) finally put the Lions on the board with a timely power play goal to move the team within one.
In an all-out effort for the equalizer goal, the Lions would once again sacrifice defensively as Pierre-Olivier Morin (Trois-Rivieres, Que.) padded UQRT's lead. The Patriotes would add an empty netter to seal the victory, 4-1.

Toronto 5 @ Nipissing 3
There wasn’t much to separate the Nipissing Lakers men’s hockey team and the University of Toronto Varsity Blues Friday night and despite outshooting the Blues, the Lakers came up short.

Western 6 @ RMC 1
KINGSTON, Ont. – Six different Mustangs contributed goals and Greg Dodds turned in a solid effort to help Western prolong RMC's early season struggles, handing the Paladins a 6-1 loss in front of their home fans at Constantine Arena.
Zach Harnden had a three point night, registering a goal and two assists to bring his season point-total up to 19 in only 11 games. The veteran forward is currently on a four-game point streak, during which stretch he has compiled three goals and five assists for a total of eight points.
Adam Stoykewych, Matt Marantz, Matt Clarke, Stephen Gaskin, and Stefan Salituro also had multi-point nights for the Mustangs. Stoykewych, Marantz, Clarke and Salituro all had a goal and one assist while Gaskin chimed in with two assists on the night.
Mark Begert and Daniel Erlich provided the rest of the offense on Friday with Begert assisting on Erlich's sixth of the year just over three minutes into the third. With his third-period goal, Erlich ensured that he would both extend his amazing eleven game point streak and remain on top of the OUA in points with 22.
In Western's own zone, Greg Dodds was solid once again for the Mustangs, turning aside 27 of 28 shots to earn his third win of the season. Although he has had quite a low sample size compared to most of his competition, playing only 200 minutes so far this season, the rookie goaltender currently leads the OUA in both goals against average (1.20) and save percentage (0.961).
The loss to Western leaves RMC searching for their first win of the season as the Paladins have gone 0-13-0 this season and remain the only pointless team in the OUA. They will have a chance to turn their luck around when they welcome Guelph (6-5-2) to Kingston tomorrow night.
The Mustangs, on the other hand, still sit two points out of first place in the OUA West with 16 points and have two games in hand on third-place Toronto (9-4-0). Besides Toronto, the only other teams between Western and first place in their division are Lakehead (9-2-0) and Windsor (9-2-0), who the Mustangs will play on November 29 and December 16, respectively.

Guelph 3 @ Carleton 4 (SO)
The Carleton Ravens and Guelph Gryphons needed overtime and a shootout on Friday night to determine the winner of their OUA men’s hockey game.
Joey West (Orleans, ON) scored the winning goal for Carleton after swooping down the right side of the ice before snapping the puck past Guelph goalkeeper, Keith Hamilton to give the Ravens a 4-3 shootout victory.
Ravens net-minder Frances Dupuis (Ottawa, ON) stopped two of three Guelph’s shots for the win.
“I knew their final shooter was a skilled player and didn’t want to give up the tying goal so I took away the top part of the net and made the save,” Dupuis said.
“I thought we (Carleton) played an excellent game but ran into some penalty trouble in the third period which cost us the lead. In the end it’s good to get back on the winnings side of things, it will help our confidence.”
The lead Dupuis is talking about was a 3-0 Carleton advantage that evaporated over the course of the third period.
The Ravens led 2-0 after 20 minutes of play then scored on their first shift of the third period to go up by three.
But penalties started to take their toll with the Gryphons scoring twice on the power play and once five on five.
“I was happy with our compete level, we battled hard and stuck together throughout the entire game, a win like that is something to build on,” said Marty Johnston, Carleton head coach.
Linden Bahm (Kinburn, ON), Jeff Hayes (Ottawa, ON) and Jake Cardwell (Niagara Falls, ON) scored for Carleton in regulation. Michael McNamee had two assists and found the back of the net in the shoot-out.
Carleton outshot Guelph 39-29. Frances Dupuis made 26 saves for his second win of the season. The Ravens (7-4-1) went 1-5 on the power play while Guelph (6-5-2) finished the night 2-5.

Waterloo 2 @ Ottawa 4
The Gee-Gees men’s hockey team downed the defending OUA West champions, the Waterloo Warriors, 4-2 on Friday night and racked up a seventh consecutive victory. The win brings Ottawa’s record to 8-5-0 and drops Waterloo’s to 5-6-1.
The Gee-Gees played a resilient game, as they responded to each of the Waterloo goals by scoring just minutes after. “It’s important to be resilient. I think at this moment we’re in a bubble where nothing bothers us, so we get scored on and we come right back at our opponents and that helps kill our opponents’ momentum and emotion,” said Gee-Gees head coach Real Paiement.
Ottawa was able to play a very good defensive game, keeping the CIS top goal scorer Chris Chappelle off the score sheet and limiting his overall impact. “We knew he was the best scorer in the league, so we played tight on him and always had a man shadowing him and it worked out in the end,” explained Gee-Gees captain David Foucher.
The Gee-Gees started the first period exactly as a team on a six game winning streak should, hitting and playing aggressive on the puck. Their good start and hard work paid off as Ottawa opened the scoring at the 13:06 mark, when Mathieu Guertin scored a beautiful goal. The rookie forward deeked several Waterloo players while cutting towards the middle of the ice and ripped the puck into the top corner with assists going to Matt White and Mathieu Leduc. Ottawa struck again when Andrew Creppin stole the puck and fired it past the Waterloo keeper, ending the period at 2-0 for the Gee-Gees.
The Warriors took the wind out of the Gee-Gees sails, as Waterloo capitalised on a power play opportunity early in the second period to cut Ottawa’s lead to one. Only a little bit over a minute later, the Gee-Gees got their two-goal lead back thanks to Alexandre Touchette who scored following a couple of wacks at a weird bounce that came back in front of the net.
The third period felt like deja vu, as the visiting Warriors scored only two minutes into the period and 22 seconds later, the Gee-Gees regained their second two-goal lead when Paul Landry scored his first goal of the season from a beautiful wrap around pass from Taylor Collins making it a game at 4-2.

Waterloo 1 @ McGill 4
MONTREAL -- Defencemen Ryan McKiernan and Jean-Philippe Mathieu each scored once as No.5-ranked McGill quadrupled the Waterloo Warriors 4-1 in men's university hockey at McConnell Arena, Saturday.
It was McGill's sixth win in their last eight meetings with Waterloo, improving their all-time record against the Warriors to 12-17-3 dating back to their first rendez-vous in 1964.
The Redmen, who had a 42-30 edge in shots, led 1-0 after the first period and 3-1 after two.
"I liked our work ethic," said McGill head coach Kelly Nobes, whose troops snapped a rare two-game losing streak. "It was one of the things that has been lacking the last couple of games. Our main objective tonight was to make sure that regardless of the outcome, we would outwork our opponent for three periods."
Rookie Alexis Millette opened the scoring for McGill at 15:29 of the first period. It was the third marker of the season for the physical & occupational therapy freshman, who has tallied seven points in seven regular season games. Including non-conference games, he has a 6-5-11 record in 12 contests overall.
Warriors forward Colin Behenna, who hails from Waterloo, evened the score at 1-1 only 60 seconds into the second frame.
McKiernan, a senior from White Plains, N.Y., tallied what proved to be the game-winner midway through the second period to give McGill a 2-1 lead. Mathieu, who assisted on McKiernan's goal, then made it 3-1 less than three minutes later.
Guillaume Langelier-Parent added an empty-netter with 12 seconds remaining to ice the contest. It was his second point of the night.
Freshman goaltender Jacob Gervais-Chouinard made 29 saves to collect the win between the pipes for McGill. Justin Leclerc registered 38 saves in a losing cause for the Warriors.
McGill was 2-for-6 on the power-play and killed off all three shorthanded situations.
The injury bug that devastated the Redmen lineup last season has hit the team again over the last few games. Regulars scratched for the confrontation against Waterloo included D Hugo Laporte, F David Rose, F Cedric McNicoll and F Jonathan Brunelle.
"We're banged up but the nice thing this season is that we have more depth," said Nobes, who is maintaining a 29-man roster, which is three more players than he carried last year. "A good example of that is (rookie) Alexandre Lemieux who played his first (regular season) game tonight and had a great game. He was very thorough (in the way he played) and it is clear that he has been paying attention in practice."
Among the others who have contributed much more than was expected is the aforementioned Millette, as well as Neil Blunden, a senior defenceman who saw limited duty over his first three years but has been among the team's top rearguards thus far.
