Ryerson 3 @ Lakehead 4
The Lakehead Thunderwolves edged the Ryerson Rams 4-3 on Friday night at the Fort William Gardens in Thunder Bay in front of a lively crowd of 3,143.
Ryan Magill notched the winner for Lakehead with just 23 seconds remaining in the game.
It was a great opening period of action highlighted by great pace and good scoring chances for both sides.
Thunderwolves captain Andrew Wilkins got the home side on the board first when he banged a rebound past Ryerson goaltender Troy Passingham. Cody Alcock and Keith Grondin had the assists on the goal at 8:41 of the opening frame.
After a Wolves’ giveaway in the neutral zone, Ryerson forward Victor Terreri outwaited Lakehead netminder Justin McDonald and slid the puck around him, tying the game at 1-1 at 11:44 of the first.
Justin McDonald’s made a huge save early in the second period on a Ryerson two- on-none, and shortly afterwards Lakehead defenceman Luke Maw batted home a rebound off a Keith Grondin slap-shot just 1:59 into the period to make it 2-1 for the Wolves.
The Wolves continued their strong season of great short-handed play when Mike Hammond intercepted a pass at center ice, then broke in and fed a great cross crease pass to Kelin Ainsworth who put it up and over Passingham making it 3-1.
Rams’ forward Lucas Froese got Ryerson to within one goal when he shoveled a loose puck past McDonald at 12:00 of the second.
It was an intense third period with both teams battling it out with first place in the OUA West on the line. Rams goalie Troy Passingham kept the score at 3-2 with a huge save on a Cody Alcock short-handed breakaway halfway through the final frame.
McDonald returned the favor a short time later when he stopped Victor Terreri on a breakaway of his own.
Ryerson tied the score with five minutes left in the game when Andrew Buck broke behind the Lakehead defense and out-waited a sprawling McDonald.
With just 23 seconds left on the clock, Lakehead’s Ryan Magill found a loose puck beside the net and rifled it into the wide-open cage, sealing the 4-3 win.
The victory puts Lakehead one point ahead of Ryerson atop the OUA West Division.

Ottawa 2 @ Nipissing 4
Balanced scoring, great goaltending and an overall impressive effort gave the Nipissing Lakers their first victory of 2014.
The Lakers got two points from Grant Toulmin, Conor O’Donnell, Dorian Peca and Jeff Leaist and goalie Kirk Rafuse made 36 saves as the Lakers topped the Ottawa Gee Gees 4-2 Friday night at Memorial Gardens.
A fast paced and hard hitting game saw the Lakers open the scoring as Tyler Gjurich finished off a pretty passing play and scored the game’s opening goal.
Peca and captain Matt Paton picked up assists as the trio was buzzing around the net all night.
The Gee Gees would answer in the second period, but two goals – including Peca’s game-winner – shortly after put the Lakers in a comfortable position heading into the third period.
Toulmin put the Lakers back in front with a shorthanded goal and Peca score on the power less than four minutes late to give the Lakers a 3-1 lead heading into the final period.
The Gee Gees would score early to cut the lead to one, but Leaist would pick up his second point of the game as he blasted a shot from the point on the power play into the back of the net.
From there Rafuse took over and earned the win.
He didn’t have to be spectacular, but was very good making a number of difficult saves throughout the game.
Lakers head coach Mike McParland talked about offence from the defence and how he’d like to see more, and that’s exactly what he got as the Lakers defencemen picked up three points on the night, including Leaist’ goal.
With the win, the Lakers jump past Laurentian and into eighth place in the East Division and now sit just four points behind both UOIT and Concordia.
The Lakers next action comes a week from Friday as they host Concordia before taking on McGill Saturday night.
Both games are set for 7 p.m. at Memorial Gardens.

UQTR 4 @ Laurentian 3
After a devastating 12-3 loss to UQTR last Saturday, the Laurentian Voyageurs Men’s hockey team looked to rebound in a rematch Friday night and end UQTR’s 7 game win streak. The score wasn’t in their favour when the final buzzer sounded, but they did play strong and Laurentian goalie Alain Valiquette stood on his head, making 34 saves, as they fell to UQTR 4-3.
The Voyageurs were the first to get on the board, with a goal by Dylan Fitze 7:35 into the game for his 8th goal on the season, assisted by Brian Nanne. The lead lasted for just over 8 minutes, when Pierre-Olivier Morin of UQTR got a shorthanded, unassisted breakaway to tie it up, while teammate Olivier D’Aoust was in the box for roughing. At the end of the first, shots were 10-8 in favour of UQTR.
UQTR took a 2-1 lead early in the 2nd period, scoring 3:47 into it on a goal by Billy Lacasse, with assists going to Guillaume Asselin and Tommy Tremblay. On a Laurentian power-play, with UQTR’s Asselin penalized for hooking, Voyageurs’ Nick Esposto tied it up with his 8th goal of the season, assists to Marc-Alain Begin and Adam Glynn. After a hard hit by UQTR at 6:45 of the period, Laurentian’s Brandon Howes was slow to get up with an apparent injury. He later left the game and did not return. Shots were 19-7 in favour of UQTR for the second period as the score was knotted at 2-2.
Soon after a Laurentian penalty kill midway through the final period, Fitz scored his second goal of the game, and 9th of the season, with a beautiful top-shelf snipe to put the Voyageurs up 3-2. The excitement didn’t last long, as UQTR tied it up less than 2 minutes later, with the goal going to Asselin for his 7th of the season. UQTR took the final lead at 16:06 of the 3rd period when Tremblay got his 9th goal of the season, assists going to Asselin, for his 3rd point of the night, and Raphael Boudreau. The shots on goal in the 3rd were 9-5 for UQTR.
Laurentian went 1/5 on the power play and UQTR went 0/2.

Queen’s 1 @ McGill 2
MONTREAL -- Mathieu Pompei of Laval, Que., snapped a deadlock with the game-winner at 5:45 of the final period as fifth-ranked McGill skated to a hard-earned 2-1 conquest over No.10-Queen's in men's hockey before a raucous standing-room crowd of 1,471 at McConnell Arena, Friday.
It marked the 12th consecutive year that McGill prevailed in their annual faculty of management Winter Carnival game, the fifth straight capacity crowd with over 1,000 fans at the 950-seat facility and was the largest home attendance for the Redmen since March 5, 2010 when they drew 1,656 to see McGill eliminate UQTR 7-4 in the OUA East finals.
"Sometimes a large crowd can make the guys a little bit nervous to start but we used it well," said Redmen rearguard Ryan McKiernan, whose power-play marker gave McGill a 1-0 lead midway through the openIng period. It was his 10th of the season and he is now tied for the CIS lead in goals by defencemen. "The crowd was very supportive and we played like we had a thousand people pushing our backs tonight. We used it to our advantage and we were flying because of it and that was part of the reason we won."
Queen's tied the score at 1-1 at 5:18 of the final stanza but Pompei answered quickly, netting the decisive goal, his sixth of the campaign, just 27 seconds later.
"The school spirit was awesome tonight," said Redmen head coach Kelly Nobes. "It was great to see so many McGill students at a university hockey game. It should be like that every night. There was an amazing atmosphere in the building and it started when the entire crowd sang the national anthem. We've never seen that here before."
McGill had a 38-26 edge in shots on net as rookie goaltender Jacob Gervais-Chouinard made 25 saves for the victory, improving to 9-3 on the season. he now ranks third among all OUA netminders and sixth in the nation with a 1.97 goals-against average. His save percentage (.929) ranks fifth in the league and sixth in the nation.
McGill shooters had a distinctive territorial advantage but were robbed on at least a half-dozen occasions by Queen's freshman Kevin Bailie, a 22-year-old native of Belleville, Ont., who played five seasons in the OHL with Oshawa and London.
"We played a great game, had the puck a lot and came up with a number of great scoring chances," said Nobes. "We played well without the puck. Our goaltender was solid and our special teams were working, It was a good team effort."
The Redmen, who won for the third straight outing, improved to 15-5-1 and took sole possession of first-place in a horse-race for the OUA East Division pennant with 31 points and seven games remaining on the schedule. They are perched one precarious point ahead of UQTR (15-4-0) and two ahead of both Carleton (14-5-1) and Queen's (12-3-5).
McGill, which swept their season series against the Gaels, have now won 25 consecutive games over their long-time rivals and leads the all-time series with a 119-50-2 overall record in 171 lifetime meetings in a long-standing series that dates all the way back to 1895. It is the world's third oldest on-going hockey rivalry.
The Redmen, who have seven games remaining before playoffs, will host Royal Military College, coached by former McGill player and assistant coach Adam Shell, on Saturday. One of his assistant coaches is Sam Bloom, who starred with the Redmen from 2005 to 2009.

Toronto 4 @ Waterloo 8
The Waterloo Warriors' offensive attack might have been missing some key pieces, but a pair of high-scoring vets made sure they didn't miss a beat.
With injuries to leading scorer Chris Chappell (Pickering) and top-six forward Luke Lynes (Washington) (among others), Justin Larson (Buckhorn) and Colin Behenna(Waterloo) notched five points each, and the Warriors avenged an 8-2 loss on November 2 as they trounced the Toronto Varsity Blues 8-4 in front of a raucous crowd at the Columbia Icefield Arena on Friday night.
Warriors captain Joe Underwood (Canton) added a goal and three assists, and Brett Mackie (Whitby) scored two third period goals to push the Warriors' record to 9-8-2 on the season. Michael Markovic scored twice for the Blues, who fall to 11-8-2. Mike Morrison (Hamilton) made 21 saves for Waterloo in the win, while Blues keeper Brett Willows turned aside 26 shots before being replaced late in the game by Michael Nishi.
For a game that included twelve total goals, the first period was relatively tame from an offensive standpoint. Markovic opened the scoring when he got free on the back post and tapped in a cross-crease pass, but Josh Woolley (Cambridge) evened things up late in the stanza when he poked a rebound through Willows' pads to square the score at 1-1. Although scoring in the period was even, the ice was decidedly tilted in favour of the hosts – Waterloo outshot Toronto 14-3 through 20 minutes.
Toronto's Ernesto Valente opened the scoring in the second when he tipped home a point shot for a 2-1 Blues lead. Shortly thereafter, Underwood jumped in as the trailer on an odd-man rush and deflected home a gorgeous Behenna feed to tie the game again.
Less than two minutes later, Larson gave the Warriors their first lead of the night when he reached behind himself to tip in another laser feed from Behenna to make it 3-2 for Waterloo. The Blues drew even with a shorthanded marker when Markovic grabbed a Morrison giveaway and made no mistake with an open net, and Blake Boddy put the visitors in front again with a nifty play down-low to make the score 4-3 late in the second.
The turning point of the game likely came in the closing moments of the middle frame, when the Warriors, down a goal, were forced to kill off a 41-seccond 5-on-3 advantage. But instead of treading water, the Warriors actually surged to the equalizer when Colin Behenna (Waterloo) rapped home a rebound with 39 seconds left to make it 4-4 after the second.
Waterloo then used a couple of big early stops by Morrison and a dominant power play unit to propel them to complete ownership of the final stanza. Twice in a span of 2:26 – and twice while on the power play – Mackie converted a sharp Larson-Behenna passing play for what would eventually be the game-winning goal and the first insurance marker.Riley Sonnenburg (Cambridge) potted a rebound to make it 7-4, and Larson rounded out the scoring with a late rocket one-timer on a two-man advantage.
The Warriors will now try to make it two wins in a row when they travel south to take on the Windsor Lancers tomorrow night. Puck drop is slated for 7:30 pm.
Notes: The Warriors went 4-for-8 on the power play, while Toronto went 0-for-5…Larson and Behenna have now combined for a whopping 27 points in the last six games…This was Waterloo's first victory in five games this season against Toronto-based opponents.

MONTREAL -- Max Le Sieur, a sophomore from Montreal, scored back-to-back goals, including a shorthanded effort, as No.5-ranked McGill coasted to a 7-2 victory over Royal Military College at McConnell Arena, Saturday.
McGill, which clinched a playoff berth over the past weekend for the 10th consecutive season, upped their current win streak to four. The Redmen, who held a 58-20 shot advantage, led 3-0 after one period on goals by sophomores David Rose and Patrick Delisle-Houde along with one from rookie Carl Gelinas
After Mathieu Pompei made it 4-0 at 3:15 of the middle period, Le Sieur went to work, scoring at 4:53 and 7:58 (shorthanded) to put the game completely out of reach at 6-0. It was McGill's sixth shorthanded marker of the season, which ranks as the third-highest total in the league behind UQTR (8) and Lakehead (7).
Forty-seven seconds later, however, RMC junior Scott McDonald connected on a power-play to spoil goaltender Karel St. Laurent's bid for a shutout. Cedric McNicoll replied with his eighth goal, one shy of the team lead, to make it 7-1 for McGill after two.

Ryerson 7 @ Lakehead 1
The Lakehead Thunderwolves were drubbed 7-1 by the visiting Ryerson Rams in front of 2589 fans on Saturday night at the Fort William Gardens in Thunder Bay, ON.
It definitely wasn’t the start that Lakehead envisioned after an exciting win on Friday night as Ryerson had a 3-0 lead before the first period was half over.
Jamie Wise was the first Rams player to get on the board when he fired a hard slapshot up and over Lakehead goalie Justin McDonald at 4:20 of the opening frame.
Shortly after, Ryerson’s Jason McDonough found a loose puck that squirted out from behind the Wolves net that he shoveled past McDonald.
Carson Dubchak had a great chance for the Wolves when his hard wrister beat Rams netminder Troy Passingham but couldn’t beat the iron.
Then Rams’ captain Andrew Buck beat McDonald at 10:05 of the first to give Ryerson the early 3-0 lead.
Lakehead seemed to control the majority of the second period, at least as far as scoring opportunities went.
The period was highlighted by great chances by Andrew Wilkins and a Kelin Ainsworth shot that rang off the post, but the Wolves were unable to solve Passingham who was strong in net for the Rams for the second night in a row.
Ryerson defenseman Kent McPherson gave the Rams a commanding 4-0 lead 14:34 of the second frame on a 5-on-3 power-play.
Chris de la Lande got Lakehead on the board with a blast from the point that beat Passingham and pulled the Thunderwolves to within three goals. The assists were credited to Ryan Magill and Wilkins.
In the third period, Jamie Wise scored his second goal of the game with Jay Gilbert in the box for tripping when he tucked the puck past McDonald, increasing Ryerson’s lead to 5-1.
Ryerson put the game out of reach with two late goals to give the Rams a decisive 7-1 win and a series split with the Wolves.
Shots on goal for the game were 34-31 in favor of the Rams.
The loss leaves Lakehead one point behind first-place Ryerson in the OUA West Division, but the Wolves have the advantage of holding two games in hand over the Rams.

The Patriotes offence was spread out throughout the line-up as all five goals were scored by different skaters. Tommy Tremblay scored the game’s opening goal and finished the night with three points to lead the way for UQTR, while Keven Robert recorded the game-winning goal early in the second period.
UOIT would cut the Patriotes lead to 3-1 early in the third period as James Diminie (Cobourg, Ont.) scored his third goal of the season, with Brendan Wise (Stouffville, Ont.) and James Woodcroft (Milton, Ont.) picking up assists on the play. Unfortunately for UOIT, that is all of the offence they would generate as UQTR added two late goals to earn the road-victory.
Colin Dzijacky (Thunder Bay, Ont.) got the nod in net once again for UOIT and had a 35 save performance. With 545 saves in his freshman campaign, he ranks second in the CIS trailing only Ryan Holfeld of the University of Saskatchewan (571 saves).
The game ended with some fireworks as the teams combined for 16 penalties with four minutes left on the clock. Three players from each team were ejected from the game.
The rough play at the end of the game sets up an interesting rematch next Friday night when the Ridgebacks travel to Trois-Rivières.
If the playoffs were to begin today, the two teams would match-up as UQTR (16-4-0) sits in second place in the OUA eastern conference standings while UOIT (6-12-3) remains in the seventh spot.
