YORK WINS COME FROM BEHIND BATTLE AGAINST THE MUSTANGS, WHILE QUEEN'S START 2007 SEASON STRONG
York 4, Western 3
The York Lions women's hockey team stormed out of the gate in the third period, erasing a two-goal deficit to beat the Western Mustangs 4-3 this past Saturday in London, Ont.
Justine Jackson (Rosebud, AB.) opened the scoring in the third, finishing off abeautiful play set up by linemate Courtney Unruh (Fort St. John, BC). Unruh skated behind the net and made an incredible behind-the-back pass to Jackson, who slid the puck home between Western goalie Danielle Le Ber's pads.
Mandy Cole (Peterborough, Ont) scored two minutes later, throwing a puck on net that found its way through a screen and past Le Ber to draw York even. Western did regain the lead, but the Lions persevered and tied the game when Cole netted her second of the game and fourth of the season, one-timing a pass from Unruh on a two-on-one.
The Lions took the lead for good when Michelle Guy (Kitchener, Ont) buried a shot from the hash marks on a two-on-one, midway through the third. Megan Slumskie (Kitchener, 1-1) earned the win between the pipes for the Lions.
Queen's 5, UOIT 1
The Queen's Golden Gaels Women's Hockey team cruised to a 5-1 victory over the University of Ontario Institute of Technology this past Thursday night at the Strathcona Paper Centre in Napanee, Ont.
2006 OUA Rookie of the Year Elizabeth Kench of Gananoque, Ont., helped the Gaels to their first victory of the year by netting the opening goal at 6:28 of the first period on a nifty pass from Becky Conroy of Pembroke, Ont. Kench also assisted on the Gaels second goal scored by Victoria Kaufmann (Whitby, Ont.) which put them up 3-0.
Katie Boyd of Richmond Hill, Ont. continued her strong play in net for the Gaels facing a total of 22 shots and only allowing one goal.
Although shots were relatively even on both sides of the rink, the Gaels appeared to be the stronger team putting in a full 60 minutes.
Head Coach Rob Lalonde said this was much improved over the last two games when they lost to Windsor in the opening game of the season and then failed to defend a three-goal lead against Western just a day later.
"The girls came out much stronger tonight and this time we didn't let it slip away," said Head Coach Rob Lalonde. "We kept pressing and we were able to finish. Overall we have some areas where we can improve, but it was a good convincing win we can build on."
