WINDSOR FIGHTS FOR PLAYOFF POSITIONING, UOIT TAKES DRAW AGAINST QUEEN'S
The UOIT Ridgebacks women's hockey team (1-17-2-2_ skated to a 3-3 draw with the Queen's University Golden Gaels (8-8-6-0) on Saturday night. UOIT held a pair leads throughout the course of the game but were unable to hold off the visiting Golden Gaels as they found a way to find tie up the score, preventing the Ridgebacks from earning their first win on home ice in their inaugural season.
After finding themselves down by a goal after one period, the Ridgebacks scored two second period markers to give them their first lead of the game. A pair of local athletes scored for UOIT as Melissa Findlay (Oshawa, ON) found the back of the net at the 10:37 mark of the second period while Cheri Ostroskie (Oshawa, ON) gave the Ridgebacks the lead three minutes later. The lead did not last for long as Queen's tied up the game with less than two minutes remaining in the period, as the teams were tied up at 2-2.
With a win in their sights, UOIT came out flying to begin the third with their hard work paying off as Carling Jeyes (Little Britain, ON) scored her fourth goal of the season restoring the Ridgebacks one goal lead. At this point of the game, Queen's picked up the tempo looking for the tying goal. Putting everything they could on net directed at goaltender Carleigh Taggart (Oshawa, ON), the Golden Gaels managed to slip one past the net-minder as Andrea Leblanc scored with eight minutes left on the clock. With the game knotted up, both teams played mistake free hockey down the stretch as they finished regulation time playing to a 3-3 tie.
Both teams skated hard for the entire five minute overtime period, but were still unable to register another goal as the teams went home with one point apiece. Queen's had a power play during overtime, but Taggart shut the door making four stops in the final frame.
Despite 19 minor penalties called in the game, none of the six goals were scored on the power play. UOIT was 0-for-9 while Queen's was 0-for-10 with the man advantage. The Golden Gaels out shot the Ridgebacks 37-23 in the game.
Windsor 3, Waterloo 1
In a penalty filled affair, the Lancers prevailed 3-1 over the Waterloo Warriors, vastly improving their chances at obtaining home ice advantage in the postseason.
The first goal of the game came at 5:01 of the first period. The Lancers had gained the zone and began cycling the puck in an effective manner.
Candace Rapchak cycled the puck down low and skated hard around the back of the net where she fed a beautiful pass to a streaking Kelly Calhoun who wasted no time firing the puck to the low right hand side. Tara Williams also garnered an assist on the play.
However, the Warriors were not going to fade gently into the night. At 10:42, Sarah Bryson capitalized on a power play opportunity when she banged home a Jamie Tessier rebound.
The first period ended in a 1-1 tie. The physicality of the game continued throughout the second, with 11 minor penalties being assessed during the period.
The Lancers killed off an elongated 5-3 power play after being assessed three penalties in just over a minute's time.
The ladies regained the lead 5:01 into the period when Candace Rapchak ripped a wrist shot low glove side on Raven net minder, Erin Bridgewater. The goal was scored on the power play with assists given to Ashley Kirby and Casandra Melcohe.
Windsor carried their lead into the third, where the physicality continued. They would pad their lead after numerous scoring chances led to another man-advantage situation. Darris Ford completed a one-timer from a Jodiyln Brown pass at 11:39. An additional assist was awarded to Manon Davis.
From there on in, the Lancers held their own blue line, and Jamie Tessier was flawless to finish the game 3-1. There was much emotion on the day, as the Ravens' loss all but eliminates them from postseason contention.
