QUEEN�S HANDS LOSS TO UOIT, LAURIER DEFEATS GUELPH IN CLOSE CONTEST
Queen's University (5-5-2) handed the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (1-10-0-1) (UOIT) another loss at the Strathcona Paper Centre on Saturday in a 3-1 defeat. It marked the second straight victory for the Golden Gaels who are presently in sixth place overall, while UOIT remain at the bottom of the table.
The Golden Gaels took it to the Ridgebacks, out shooting the visiting side 33-15. Although UOIT took an early lead twelve minutes into the first on a goal by Rikki Palmateer (Cobourg, Ont.), the Gaels responded to score a goal in each period to seal the victory at 3-1.
Chantelle Johnson (Hamilton, Ont.), Kelsey Thomson (Martintown, Ont.) and Mary McNeil (Toronto, Ont.) recorded the three Queen's goals. Gael goaltender Melissa John (Unionville, Ont.) earned the win while Ridgeback net minder Melissa Scott (Oshawa, Ont.) played a solid game making 30 saves in a losing effort.
Sunday November 11, 2007 - Laurier 3, Guelph 2
The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (9-1-1) sit solo atop the standings as they improved their record with a 3-2 win over Guelph University (9-3) on Sunday evening. Guelph is two spots below the Hawks in third place following weekend play as they look to continue to put pressure on second-place Toronto (8-1-0-1).
After going down by a goal only one minute into the game by Gryphon, Patricia Rose Harris (Colborne, Ont.), and the Hawks responded with two power play markers in the period to capture a 2-1 lead. Captain Lauren Meschino (Toronto, Ont.) netted the first while rookie Alicia Martin (Etobicoke, Ont.) added the second.
Guelph equalized on a goal from Erin Small (Pickering, Ont.) as she beat Liz Knox (Stouffbville, Ont.) in the Laurier goal. Laura Bartolini (Mississauga, Ont.) picked up the game winner late in the third frame to secure the win.
Knox stopped 22 of the 24 shots on net while Guelph's Sarah Long (Scarborough, Ont.) stopped 32 before taking a seat on the bench in the final 40 seconds of the game for a last attempt with one additional skater.
