GUELPH AND QUEEN'S MOVE ON TO SEMIFINALS
The Guelph Gryphon women's hockey team defeated the visiting Windsor Lancers 3-1 on Saturday night to advance to the OUA semi-finals against the Toronto Varsity Blue.
The first period was a rough one for the visiting team, as they were not able to stop the rushing Guelph women. Only 2:22 in to the period, lead scorer Jennifer Rivers (York, Ont) fed a pass to team mate Tayne Hewer (Barrie, Ont) who capitalized on the one timer opportunity to give the Gryphs a 1-0 lead. Half way through the period spelled more disaster for Windsor goalie Jamie Tessier (Cooper Cliff, Ont) when another one timer found it's way to the back of the net. Stephanie Dykes (Sarnia, Ont) fired the pass from Carrie Tokarcyzk (St. Thomas, Ont) from behind the net. The two goal deficit is one the Lancers would not surpass.
Windsor would score their lone goal with 4:37 remaining in the first, on a one timer from Candace Rapchak (Stoney Pointe, Ont) to Manon Davis (Sudbury, Ont) to shatter the Gryphons hopes at a shutout. Guelph would score their third goal late in the third to seal the victory. Sarah McClinchey (Brampton, Ont) fired a wrist shot top corner on a pass from Dykes, who had two points on the night.
"Its exciting playoff hockey," commented head coach Rachel Flanagan. "Leading up to this and the last two games we lost, we played the style that we wanted to play we just couldn't find the back of the net and tonight it all came together.\"
Queen's 2, York 0
The Queen's Golden Gaels women's hockey team are moving on to the next round of the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) playoffs after a 2-0 victory over the York Lions Saturday night at the Kingston Memorial Centre.
After a scoreless first period that saw the Gaels narrowly outshoot the Lions 8-7, Queen's took the lead at 17:48 when forward Elizabeth Kench of Gananoque, Ont. notched her first of the playoffs. Kench received a pass in the high slot from Rebecca Conroy of Pembroke, Ont. and fired a low wrist-shot straight through the five-hold of York net-minder Megan Slumskie of Kitchener, Ont. Queen's forward Amanda Morra of Pickering, Ont. had the second assist on what would be the eventual game winner.
Though the Gaels had numerous chances, including a 5-on-3 power-play, the York goaltender kept her team within striking distance of tying the score. The Gaels ended up out-shooting the Lions 18-9 by the end of the period.
In the third period, both teams play fast and tough as the Gaels tried to extend their lead, while the Lions pushed to tie things up. The third would see the Lions out-shoot the Gaels 14-8, but Gaels goalie Melissa John of Unionville, Ont., was solid, stopping a total of 30 shots and recording her third shutout of the year.
Andrea LeBlanc of Newmarket, Ont. made the score 2-0 at 19:42 of the final frame netting the empty net goal.
With the win, the Gaels advance to the OUA semi-final round and will take on the No. 3 ranked Laurier Golden Hawks. The series is set to begin on Friday, February 22 at the Strathcona Paper Centre in Napanee, Ont. with the puck dropping at 7:30pm.
Queen's made a statement just weeks ago when John recorded her second shutout of the season against the Golden Hawks, as Queen's upset Laurier in Napanee on January 25. The season series between the two teams is currently 2-1 in favour of Laurier.
