LANCERS CLINCH PLAYOFF SPOT, WHILE QUEEN'S TAKES BIG WIN AGAINST YORK
The Windsor Lancers Women's Hockey team clinched a spot in the OUA Playoffs on Saturday afternoon as they knocked off the Western Mustangs 2-0 at South Windsor Arena.
The victory moves the Lancers to 12-12-1-1 on the season as they currently sit in 5th place in the OUA Divison and only two points back of Queen's for 4th place.
Windsor has one game remaining next week as they travel to Waterloo, Ontario on Sunday night to battle the first place Laurier Golden Hawks.
On Saturday, after two scoreless periods, the Lancers finally got on the board 56 seconds into the third period as Candace Rapchak scored a powerplay marker to give Windsor the 1-0 lead.
Kelly Calhoun would add an insurance goal late in the period to give the Lancers the 2-0 victory and secure a playoff berth in the OUA playoffs.
Jamie Tessier was solid in goal for the Lancers as she made 23 saves to earn the shutout victory.
Windsor outshot Western 34-23 in the game.
Queen's 5, York 3
The Queen's Golden Gaels scored two goals in the third period to break a 3-3 tie and gain a valuable 5-3 win over the host York Lions Sunday afternoon. Cassandra Sparks of Whitby, Ont. scored for the Gaels at 10:22 of the third period after the teams were tied after two frames.
The Gaels were outshot 33-21 in the game and trailed 2-1 after a period. In the second, Queen's scored twice in the first seven minutes but York tied things at 3-3 with five minutes remaining.
Kelsey Thomson of Martintown, Ont. led the Gaels with a goal and two assists while Elizabeth Kench of Gananoque, Ont. added a goal.
The victory gained Queen's a weekend split of their trip to Toronto and leaves them in fourth in the OUA. They lead fifth place Windsor by two points with a game left next weekend for both teams.
