LAURIER TAKES WIN IN TOP MATCH-UP AGAINST TORONTO, WINDSOR CONTINUES WINNING WAYS AGAINST WESTERN
No.5 Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks (4-1-0) defeated the No. 6 University of Toronto Varsity Blues (3-1-0-1) at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex on Saturday.
Golden Hawk Candance Kellough (Bolton, Ont.) scored the eventual game winner at 14:07 in the first period when she roofed the puck over Varsity Blues goaltender Stephanie Lockert (Thunder Bay, Ont.) Alicia Martin (Etobicoke, Ont.) and Lauren Barch (Burlington, Ont.) assisted on the impressive play.
With a minute remaining in the first period Katherine Shirriff (Carring Place, Ont.) took a shot on net from the corner which deflected off a defencemen, and went in between the legs of Lockert for the second and final goal of the victory. Andrea Ironside (Collingwood, Ont.) and Lauren Meschino (Toronto, Ont.) recorded assists on the insurance goal.
Golden Hawk goaltender Liz Knox (Stouffville, Ont.) preserved the shutout making fourteen saves while Lockert of the Varsity Blues made 19 saves in the losing effort.
Windsor 3, Western 1
The University of Windsor (5-1) lit it up against University of Western (2-2-2) in Saturday's match-up at the home of the Lancers, who continue to shine this season currently sitting in second place behind Guelph University (6-1-0).
In a tight first period each team netted a goal to head into the second tied at one a piece. An end-to-end battle with key saves from both goaltenders left the second scoreless and them teams neck and neck at 1-1. Windsor goaltender Jamie Tessier of Copper Cliff, Ontario and Western net-minder Jessica Ulrich (Keswick, Ont.) were outstanding in the middle twenty to push for a game-winner in the third.
The Mustangs couldn't put a stop to the Lancer's attack as they scored two in the final period to lift the home side to a 3-1 victory. Lancer goal scorers on the night were Darris Ford (Echo Bay, Ont.), Kelly Calhoun (Toronto, Ont.) and Manon Davis (Sudbury, Ont.). The solo goal for the visiting Mustang is credited to Bianca Emanuele (Mississauga, Ont.).
