QUEEN'S STEAL A WIN FROM TORONTO WHILE BROCK AND WESTERN SKATE TO A DRAW
The Queen's Golden Gaels finished a perfect weekend in Toronto with a 3-2 win Sunday evening over the #6 nationally ranked Varsity Blues. The Gaels
who defeated the York Lions Saturday afternoon by the same score received the winning goal from Kori Cembal of Kingston, Ont. on the powerplay late in the second period.
The Gaels were outshot 11-7 in the first period but went into the intermission leading 2-0. A minute into the game Liz Kench of Gananoque, Ont. opened the scoring with her 11th of the season. Late in the period at 17:07 Queen's captain Cassie Sparks of Stouffville, Ont. scored to increase the lead to two goals heading into the second period.
In the middle stanza Toronto tied the game with goals at 5:12 and 11:48 but Queen's scored what turned out to be the winner with 2:19 remaining. Just 37 seconds after a Varsity Blues player took a penalty Cembal scored her sixth of the season to put the Gaels up 3-2 heading into the final frame.
In the third period Toronto put incredible pressure on Queen's but goaltender Katie Boyd stopped all 12 shots she faced as the Gaels were outshot 12-2 in the period and 35-17 for the game. Boyd had picked up the win over York as well.
The win improves Queen's record to 8-8-3 moving them past Windsor into fourth place in the OUA while second place Toronto falls to 13-3-0-1.
