UOIT RECORDS FIRST OUA VICTORY OVERY WATERLOO, WESTERN DEFEATS BROCK 2-1
UOIT 4, Waterloo 2
The University Of Ontario Institute Of Technology (UOIT) improved their record to 1-9-0-1 as they earned their first ever OUA win against the University of Waterloo (2-6-1-0). The UOIT Ridgebacks overtook the Warriors by a score of 4-2 in the history-making game.
Both teams came out strong in the first period each with great scoring opportunities but unable to capitalize until there was two minutes left on the clock. Ridgeback, Kathleen Edwards (Whitby, Ont.) fired a shot from the slot into the Warrior net for the 1-0 lead first period lead. In the second, UOIT came out blazing and netted two more goals from Jackie McArthur (Oshawa, Ont.) and Jennifer Campitelli (Scarborough, Ont.).
In the third, Waterloo outshot UOIT 14-6 and scored two goals to the Ridgeback's one, but it was not enough to upset the history-making Ridgebacks on the night. The first ever OUA victory lifts UOIT to a 1-9-0-1 record while Waterloo sits in eight place with five points.
Western 2, Brock 1
The University of Western Ontario claimed a narrow victory over Brock University by a score of 2-1 in Saturday's hockey action. The win moves Western into sixth position in the OUA standings, while Brock currently sits in ninth place.
For the Mustangs, Whitney Weisshaar (Belle River, Ont.) and Jessica Ulrich (Keswick, Ont.) were leaders on the day as Weisshaar scored twice and Ulrich made 33 saves in her first victory of the season. Ulrich came up with many key saves as the Mustangs were outshot 34-29 and managed to pull off the victory.
A scoreless second period brought about an evenly fought third with the Badgers and Mustangs notching one goal a piece. The Badgers made a bold final effort with 16 seconds remaining when they added a sixth skater after pulling goaltender Beth Clause (Hamilton, Ont.), but were unsuccessful. The final result was 2-1 in the Mustangs favour.
