WESTERN AND WINDSOR TAKE WINS AGAINST UOIT AND QUEEN'S
Rookie forward Holly Ouellette (Toronto, ON) scored three goals including the game winner in a 7-3 win over the UOIT Ridgebacks (1-14-1-1) against the Western Mustangs (6-7-3-0)
Western opened up a 3-0 lead and never looked back with solid penalty killing in a game that featured 17 powerplays for both teams.
Western opened the scoring as rookie Melissa Lee (Waterloo, ON) took a pass and beat Melissa Scott (Oshawa, ON) low to the glove side. Scott looked shaky early on as one of Western's first two shots defelected off the post and the other handcuffed her before Lee's shot, Western's third, found the back of the net.
Midway through the period, Kristin Whitney (London, ON) scored on a breakaway burying it short side on Scott. She took the puck in the neutral zone off a UOIT turnover to give Western the 2-0 lead.
Shorthanded, Western made it 3-0 off a faceoff as Whitney Weisshaar (Belle River, ON) slid the puck past Scott who was out of position. The Ridgebacks rookie goalie had let in three goals on five shots.
Then with Ridgeback Melissa Bell in the box for hooking, Weisshaar fed Ouellette for the eventual game-winning goal with a beautiful cross-crease pass. Ouellette slid it low past Scott who could not get over to the far post in time.
In the second, Western made it 5-1 just over four minutes into the frame as Ouellette tallied for her second of the game, rifling home a shot after teammate Ellie Seedhouse (Whitby, ON) fired a shot that left Ouellette with a juicy rebound.
With two Western players in the box, UOIT called a timeout to set up a set play on the man advantage and capitalized off the ensuing faceoff to make it 5-2 as Chrissy Tereshyn (Scarborough, ON) redirected a Megan Friel (Pickering, ON) shot from the point. The puck went high on Mustang rookie netminder Jessica Ulrich (Keswick, ON) who was helpless on the shot.
Ulrich was otherwise solid making 28 saves for the win.
The Mustangs padded their lead with a wraparound from Ouellette to complete the hat trick for a 6-2 score.
Ridgebacks' Bell made it 6-3 just 38 seconds after the Mustangs sixth goal before Bianca Emanuele, on a breakaway, took a pass from Ouellette to make it 7-3.
Windsor 3, Queen's 1
Riding the momentum from Saturday's 4-0 victory over UOIT, the Windsor Lancers (8-7-1-1) continued to dominate the ice on Sunday as they defeated the Golden Gaels (6-8-3-0) 3-1 to close out the first half of their season.
Windsor opened up the scoring in impressive fashion with a short handed, unassisted goal by Ashley Kirby (LaSalle, ON).
Frida Nevalinen (Sweden) scored her first career goal in the CIS on a pass from Jodilyn Brown (Corunna, ON) to give Windsor a 2-0 lead late in the first period.
After a scoreless second period, Queen's came within one on a power play goal by Kelsey Thompson (Martintown, ON). Manon Davis (Sudbury, ON) secured the win for the Lancers with her second goal of the season with 12:23 remaining in the third.
Lancer goaltender Jamie Tessier (Copper Cliff, ON) was once again outstanding in net making 23 saves in the win. Melissa John (Unionville, ON) made 28 saves for Queen's
