NO.6 TORONTO AND NO.3 LAURIER SKATE TO 2-2 DRAW WHILE QUEEN'S DEFEATS NO.9 GRYPHONS
The No. 6 Varsity Blues women's hockey team drew the defending OUA champions Laurier Golden Hawks, to a tie on Saturday afternoon at Varsity Arena.
The first period saw even play between the two teams, with the shots tied at 7-7. It was Annie Del Guidice (Hamilton, ON) who potted the first goal for the Blues on a power play pass from Emily Milito (Ottawa, ON). The Blues ended the first period with a 1-0 lead.
The Blues got into penalty trouble early in the second period, taking three penalties in the span of seven minutes. Andrea Ironside (Collingwood, ON) put the Golden Hawks on the board early in the period when she capitalized on a power play opportunity, tying the game 1-1. The Golden Hawks out shot the Blues 9-4 in the second period.
The third-ranked Golden Hawks would start the third period the same way the Blues started the second - with penalties - Laurier took three penalties in the first five minutes of the final frame. The Blues, however, were unable to put the puck past Laurier goalie Liz Knox (Stouffville, ON) until forward Karolina Urban (Kamloops, B.C.) displayed an excellent shorthanded forecheck and put the Blues back on top 2-1.
With time winding down, the Hawks opted to pull their goalie to add an extra attacker for that elusive second goal. This decision would prove to be successful when Lauren Meschino (Toronto, ON) scored on a rebound with only three seconds left in the game.
Overtime did not solve anything in this contest as Toronto and Laurier skated to a 2-2 tie.
Toronto goalie Stephanie Lockert (Thunder Bay, ON) was named the Pepsi Blue Player of the Game with 28 saves in the contest.
