RACE FOR YATES BEGINS LABOUR DAY
The Gaels visit the Waterloo Warriors in one of five OUA contests on Monday, Sept. 6. It marks a return trip to Warrior Field for the Gaels after defeating the Warriors 43-21 on Oct. 10, 2008.
In what is fast becoming an OUA tradition, the Western Mustangs and Ottawa Gee-Gees open the season against each other for the third consecutive year and fourth time in five seasons, with the 2010 edition taking place at Frank Clair Stadium in Ottawa. This is one of two games on Labour Day featuring 2009 playoff teams, as the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks pay a visit to the McMaster Marauders.
Those fans anticipating a Yates Cup rematch between Queen's and Western will have to wait until Week 5 as the Gaels visit at TD Waterhouse Stadium for the first time since 2007 in front of what should be a boisterous homecoming crowd in London, Ont.
Some other match-ups of interest:
• The McMaster Marauders visit the Western Mustangs on Saturday, Sept. 11. Western head coach Greg Marshall has never defeated his former Marauders team in two tries.
• The Battle of Toronto takes place under the lights this season, as the York Lions take on the Toronto Varsity Blues at Varsity Centre on Friday, Sept. 17.
• The following day, the McMaster Marauders visit the Ottawa Gee-Gees in one of three playoff rematches on the 2010 calendar.
• Also on Saturday, Sept. 18, regional battles take place as the Waterloo Warriors and Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks battle once again at University Stadium, while the Western Mustangs visit the Windsor Lancers in an evening affair.
• In another playoff rematch, the Western Mustangs visit the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday, Sept. 25 in a 2009 homecoming sequel. In front of a full house at Alumni Field on Sept. 26, 2009, both teams combined for 1,065 yards of total offence in a 41-39 Western victory.
• Queen's Gaels visit the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday, Oct. 16. Laurier was the only team to defeat the Gaels during their title run last year, a 25-13 outcome on Oct. 24, 2009.
The OUA regular season concludes on Saturday, Oct. 23 with five games that will no doubt have playoff implications. Last season, five teams finished with records of 6-2 or better, an OUA first.
The OUA quarter-finals will take place on Saturday, Oct. 30 followed by the OUA semifinals on Saturday, Nov. 6. The OUA football season concludes at the 103rd Yates Cup presented by Pioneer Petroleums on Saturday, Nov. 13.
