OUA FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Offence: Matthew Norman, Western Mustangs, Offensive Guard
Third-year guard Matthew Norman plowed through the experienced and talented Laval defensive line to help his team net 178 rushing yards on Saturday. Norman created a number of large holes, as he's done all year, while going against double-teams for much of the game. The running game accounted for 75 per cent of Western's offensive output. Norman also did a great job limiting the pass rush through the middle.
Defence: David Lee, Western Mustangs, Defensive End
Defensive end David Lee had two sacks and 5.5 tackles, including three for a loss, with at least five quarterback hurries in Western's loss to Laval in the Uteck Bowl. The London, Ont. native’s three tackles for a loss of 22 yards, two sacks and frequent hurries off the rush-end spot came at key moments in the contest, forcing Laval into second-and-long situations, allowing the Mustangs to hold Laval without a touchdown all day. Lee also added a forced fumble and a blocked pass in the contest and his two sacks resulted in a loss of 18 yards.
Special Teams: Darryl Wheeler, Western Mustangs, Punter
With 11 punts for 385 yards in windy conditions, including a 56-yard boot and one inside the 20 yard line, Darryl Wheeler did a great job to keep the Mustangs in the game and with good field position in the 13-11 loss. Wheeler also recovered one of his own punts - sliding in head first to cover the ball - to give the Mustangs great field position late in the first half, setting up their only score on a one-yard Ian Noble touchdown run. The junior punter also held for placekicker Lirim Hajrullahu, allowing the sophomore to come within yards of a field goal attempt into the wind to win the game with a perfect hold. His great holds also helped Hajrullahu with a 47-yarder in the third quarter. Wheeler added one tackle in the game on special teams.
