OUA Investors Group Champions for Life Spotlight: Jon Jurus
The success of Ontario University Athletics (OUA) student-athletes does not stop after graduation. They succeed not only on the playing field, but also in the classroom as they prepare for life after university. Investors Group Regional Director Jon Jurus is one of many examples of OUA’s tradition of excellence.
Jurus began his football career in Grade 10 while attending high school. After three years at quarterback, he was heavily recruited by six universities, but made the decision to attend the University of Western Ontario after a stellar recruiting trip. Legendary Western head coach Larry Haylor and his staff convinced the high schooler that they wanted and needed him the most for their team and that fall Jurus headed to London.
He began his rookie season in 1984 and was the backup for three years before getting his chance to shine. In his fifth and final year at
Western, Jurus led Western to their 21st Yates Cup win. Years later, with a different quarterback and different head coach, the Mustangs are still an extremely successful football team. This past November Western defeated the Ottawa Gee-Gees to win their 29th Yates Cup.
Graduating with an Honours Degree in Economics, Jurus transitioned into the working world seamlessly and believes that being a student-athlete allowed him to be successful after university.
“The skills and attributes that allowed me to excel athletically at the university level translated exceptionally well into my role as a consultant with Investors Group,” said Jurus.
The student from Western developed a seasoned attitude ready for the working world and landed a position at Investors Group Financial Services Inc. The former quarterback began as a consultant in the Brampton office before his first promotion to Division Director in 1993. In 2002, Jurus was once again promoted and became the Regional Director for Hamilton, the position that he still holds today.
Jurus currently resides in Guelph with this wife Janice and his three children; Brynn, 7, Paige, 5 and Joshua, 2. In his spare time he helps coach a high school football team with his brother and focuses on the development of young quarterbacks.
“The experiences, accomplishments and friendships from university will last a life-time. Most importantly, participating in athletics and being a member of a team helps immeasurably in developing a well-rounded personality that again will serve well all the years beyond university.”
