Gee-Gees run over Golden Hawks, 44-21
OTTAWA - The no. six nationally ranked University of Ottawa Gee-Gees (6-1) downed the no. 10 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (3-3) 44-21 in front of 1,296 fans at Frank Clair Stadium.
Quarterback Brad Sinopoli led the garnet-and-grey to 524 yards of offence through his 18 completions for 309 yards and three majors. The veteran quarterback closed in on the national record of 3,033 passing yards in a season set last year by Michael Faulds as he brought his total up to 2,552.
The Golden Hawks opened scoring in the game after Daniel Bishop (Mississauga, Ont.) forced a fumble on Sinopoli and starting quarterback Evan Pawliuk (Kingston, Ont.) rushed twice before Isaac Dell (Niagara Falls, Ont.) picked up his second touchdown of the year.
That would be the last lead the purple-and-gold would hold in the game. Ottawa scored three majors and five field goals throughout the balance of the contest while the Hawks only added two touchdowns.
"We beat ourselves today," said manager of football operations and head coach Gary Jeffries. "Our kicking game was as bad as I’ve seen it and we couldn’t generate any offence. Sinopoli is as good there is and we hung in there as long as we could."
Nathan Hawkes (Kitchener, Ont.) had some trouble getting kicks off because of some short snaps. The result was often hurried or in a couple of cases, an attempted rush as a result of the coverage. Laurier was 0-for-3 on third down conversions in the game.
Pawliuk finished the first half of the game going 6-for-13 for 31 yards before Shane Kelly (Basking Ridge, N.J.) stepped into the pivot role and completed 11 of 22 for 152 yards including the only passing major of the contest for the Golden Hawks. Dustin Zender (Waterloo, Ont.) picked up the most yardage as he caught three passes for 63 yards.
Laurier's defence was led by captain Mitchell Bosch (Langley, BC) who had 7.5 tackles (6 solo, 3 assisted), Giancarlo Rapanaro (Niagara Falls, Ont.) with seven (6 solo, 2 assisted) and Daniel Bishop (Mississauga, Ont.) with seven (5 solo, 4 assisted) a knockdown and a fumble.
"In the first half I've never been apart of a better defensive football game," said Patrick McGarry (Waterdown, Ont.) who had two big knockdowns as well as a fumble recovery and three tackles. "I thought we did a great job but sometimes things go a little sour and you just need to bounce back."
Dillon Heap (Waterloo, Ont.) claimed top spot in the Laurier record books for kick returns in a career. The veteran returner added 86 yards on four carries to bring his overall total to 731.
