Laurie Golden Hawks get first win over Blues 37-6
WATERLOO, Ont. - Wilfrid Laurier's men's football team (1-2) earned their first win of the season with a 37-6 victory over the visiting University of Toronto Varsity Blues (0-3).
Running back Anton Bennett (Toronto, Ont.) scored his first majors as well. He picked up one on a five yard rush in the first and the second to put the Hawks up 26-3 towards the end of the first half.
Nathan Hawkes (Kitchener, Ont.) also put in a strong performance going 3-4 on field goal attempts. His long was a 37-yarder, while he also made attempts from 29 and 31 yards.
The Blues scores both came on field goals from Andrew Lomasney (Toronto, Ont.), who went 2-2 on the night. He hit 22-yarder to get Toronto on the board late in the first and then hit another 22-yarder early in the fourth quarter to score all the Blues points.
On defence, safety Mitch Nicholson (Grand Haven, Mi.) led the way with two interceptions on the night. Team captain Mitchell Bosch (Langly B.C.) also had a pick for the Hawks total of three. Bosch picked up 3.5 tackles (1 solo, 5 assisted) and two knockdowns in the match.
Toronto was led by Christopher Johnson (Toronto, Ont.) who had six tackles (3 solo, 6 assisted) and a forced fumble. Wilkerson DeSouza (Mississauga, Ont.) claimed the Varsity Blues interception on Kelly.
