Costanzo named assistant coach and specialteams coordinator
Gee-Gees football is proud to announce the hiring of a second full-time assistant coach, Luigi Costanzo. This will be Constanzo’s second full season with the garnet and grey as special team coordinator. In addition to his duties as special team coordinator, Luigi will also be taking over alumni activities from Rick Zmich who was previously the Gee-Gees’ alumni outreach coordinator.
Prior to joining the Gee-Gees in 2010, Costanzo was the head coach of the Ottawa Junior Riders (QJFL) for six seasons, and won three consecutive league championships with the team in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
With the addition of Costanzo, the Gee-Gees coaching staff is nearly complete and ready to get down to business. “I’m very excited and motivated about my new position with the Gee-Gees football program. Working with players and staff last year was a tremendous experience, and having the opportunity to contribute on a full time basis is an honour and a privilege,” said Costanzo.
“Coach Asselin has done a great job bringing together a very talented staff for this upcoming season and I can’t wait to roll up my sleeves and collectively take the program to another level,” he added.
Costanzo’s focus remains with special teams, and he is looking forward to building on last year’s successes. “I think last year coming in with new coaches and new systems, I was very pleased with the results of the special team play and this year it’s only going to get better. I think we laid a solid foundation last year,” explained Costanzo.
Gee-Gees headcoach Jean-Philippe Asselin is very pleased to have Costanzo on board for another season. “He came in last year and took over for our special teams. We felt like we had our best special teams in 2010 for as long as I can remember,” said Asselin.
“There were some pretty exciting plays with fakes and on-side kicks, and our punt and punt return average were really good. So, we are very excited with what he was able to do in his first year, and looking forward to having him here full time.”
Asselin explained that Costanzo will also be filling the role and responsibilities of Rick Zmich who took the lead on various fundraising initiatives, revamped the annual Touchdown Dinner, and helped establish the Adopt a Gee-Gee program before leaving the team last month. With Costanzo’s knowledge, experience and presence within the Ottawa football community, Asselin believes the program will continue to be successful.
