GAELS GRAB LATE WINNER IN 20TH CARR-HARRIS CUP
Game MVP Brady Olsen scored two goals for Queen's and also added an assist. Also contributing for the the Gaels was Sam Colizza, who had the game winner and two assists. Kenney also had an impressive performance in the final game of his OUA career. RMC forward Roman Srutek had two goals, and seven other Paladins had one point apiece.
RMC got on the board just 1:41 in when a Srutek shot made it through a screen and through the five-hole of Kenney. Kenney struggled to keep it a game, as he was tested early and often, with the Gaels failing to get any good chances in the period. After a hard-hitting 20 minutes, the Paladins added another with under a minute to go to make the score 2-0 before the break.
In the second frame, under five minutes in, Queen's sprung a two-on-one short-handed from its own zone, and Olsen netted one on a great feed from Brian Moore. Afterward, the game got rough, as there were a few small battles, and a total of 17 penalties in the period. RMC scored on a power play off a deflected shot, but Queen's answered late, also on a power play of its own, to send the game into the third period trailing 3-2.
In the third period, both teams fought hard to get chances, but were shut down by the opposing defense. Finally, with just under seven minutes to go, John Clarke capped a beautiful passing play by scoring on a wrist-shot from the slot to tie the game. Just as it looked as if the Carr-Harris Cup was going into its fourth overtime in its history, Colizza pounced on a rebound and squeezed it in, which was followed by an emotional celebration, to put an end to the thriller. Olsen fell just short of a hat-trick, as his attempt at the empty net went just wide, but Colizza's goal was enough to put the Paladins away.
Queen's needs U of T to drop its final two games in regulation against Ryerson in order to grab the sixth and final spot in the playoffs. RMC fell to 7-12-5-0, but have clinched a post-season berth.
