WATERLOO, LAKEHEAD, UQTR AND OTTAWA MOVE ON IN POST-SEASON
The Ottawa Gee-Gees advanced to the East semi-final with a 6-4 win in game three of their opening round series with the Concordia Stingers. Ben McLeod and Kevin Glode scored two goals each for the Gee-Gees, while goaltender Mathieu Blanchard made 24 saves for the victory in net. The teams were tied 2-2 after 20 minutes but Ottawa buried three goals in the second period and snuffed out a late rally by the Stingers with an empty-netter in the dying second to clinch the best-of-three. Concordia jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the series Wednesday with a 4-1 with. Frederic Faucher scored twice for the Stingers in the opening win. Ottawa rebounded with a 4-3 double-OT win Saturday, with Glode playing the hero. Gee-Gee Dan MacDonald got an equalizer in the third period and though the first extra session solved nothing, Glode, a fourth-year Criminology major, scored at 11:04 of the second overtime to keep Ottawa alive. The Gee-Gees will play the No.2 nationally-ranked McGill Redmen beginning in another best-of-three series beginning Wednesday in Montreal.
The UQTR Patriotes and Lakehead Thunderwolves also advanced as they won their respective best-of-three series 2-0. UQTR took on the RMC Paladins Friday in Kingston and came away with a decisive 6-1 win. Frederic Lavoie scored twice for the Patriotes, who led 5-0 after 40 minutes. Johnathon Boutin had a goal and an assist, while goalie Dany Dallaire made 29 saves in a solid performance. The Patriotes took an early lead in the series after laying a 7-2 beating on the Paladins in Trios Rivieres. Roman Strutek scored twice for RMC to give the visitors a 2-1 lead after one period of play but the Pats scored once in the second and five more times in the third, firing 54 shots in total at Paladins goalie Blair Robertson. Eric Beaudin had two goals and an assist for UQTR, while Yan Guadette scored once and added a pair of helpers. The Patriotes will now face the Mid East champion Toronto Varsity Blues in one East semi.
Lakehead was led by their inspirational captain Joel Scherban, who stole the show in game two against the York Lions with three straight goals for the Wolves in a 4-3 OT victory Friday in Thunder Bay. Grant McCune made 43 saves for Lakehead, while Erik Lodge scored with .1 seconds remaining on the clock in the first overtime to secure the Wolves a spot in the OUA quarter-finals against the Western Mustangs. The series gets underway Wednesday.
