EWASIUK BUCKS THE TREND
Ewasiuk, a native of Edmonton, Alberta, spent three seasons at the University of Windsor. This past season he posted the second best save percentage in all of Canadian university hockey (CIS) at .932 per cent, and the sixth best goals allowed average in the CIS at 2.24 GAA.
"Jay had a great save percentage in university, which is something that I really put a lot of emphasis on," said Bucks head coach Terry Ruskowski. "We are expecting to lose both goalies from last year with David Lemanowicz going overseas and Dov Grumet-Morris most likely to advance to the AHL. Ewasiuk gives us a great building block for our 2006/07 season."
Ewasiuk spent parts of three seasons playing major junior hockey in the Western Hockey League playing for Moose Jaw and Tri-City from 1996 to 1999. He then played for his father at Grant MacEwan College in Alberta for two years before spending the last three seasons at the University of Windsor.
"Jay came into our program with little fanfare and established himself as one of the top goaltenders in Canadian university hockey," added University of Windsor head coach Dr. Vern Stenlund. "Being ranked second in Canada in save percentage is a testament to how solid his play in net was this past year and we wish him all the best next year in Laredo."
Ewasiuk, 6'0" 200 pounds, leaves the University of Windsor as the schools all-time leader in goals against average with 2.91 GAA career mark. In addition, Ewasiuk had a save percentage over .900 in all three years with the Lancers.
"I am extremely happy to sign with the Bucks," said Ewasiuk. "I had some other offers, but when Laredo expressed interest in signing me there was no question about where I was going. The Bucks are a great organization, as evidenced by their winning the CHL championship two of the last three years. I am looking forward to a good year."
His father Terry was a seventh round draft choice by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1973.
