STENLUND TO STEP DOWN AFTER 2006-07 SEASON
An Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Windsor, Coach Stenlund is stepping aside after four years at the helm of the program. In his current position, he is one of the only part-time Head Coaches in CIS Men's Hockey.
"I have enjoyed a terrific four years as the Head Coach of the Lancers Hockey program," commented Coach Stenlund. "We've had an outstanding group of men come through our program and it has been very rewarding to be part of their lives and careers here at the University of Windsor."
Over the course of his tenure, Stenlund has enjoyed the services of assistant coaches Brent Webster, Medo Martinello and Steve Pronger.
"I want to thank Coach Webster, Coach Martinello and Coach Pronger for their years of service with the team," added Stenlund. "It has been a great joy to coach with them and I want to thank them for their enthusiasm and commitment to our program."
Dr. Stenlund's coaching background included serving as the Head Coach of the Ontario Hockey League's Windsor Spitfires and in the Western Ontario Junior B circuit with the Leamington Flyers, Windsor Bulldogs and Chatham Maroons. He was also the assistant coach with the Lancers during the 1984-85 season when the Blue and Gold won the Ontario Western Division Championship.
"We would like to thank Vern for his dedicated years of service to the Lancers Men's Hockey program and wish him the best in his future endeavours," commented Athletic Director Gord Grace. "He was very committed to building a respected hockey program here at the University of Windsor and his teams reflected his dedication and strong work ethic."
In addition to being a Professor in the Faculty of Education, Stenlund will now be devoting more of his time to the Chevrolet Safe and Fun Program which he co-founded with NHL great Bobby Orr.
A former first round Ontario Hockey League draft pick and a second round NHL draft pick of the California Golden Seals, Stenlund was a standout player with OHL's London Knights where he accumulated 44 goals and 75 assists for 119 points in the 1975-76 season. Stenlund played professionally for two years with the CHL's Phoenix Roadrunners and Salt Lake Golden Eagles as well as the NHL's Cleveland Barons before turning to coaching.
The Lancers will kick-off their 2006-07 OUA season on October 13th as they host the Western Mustangs. Game time is set for 7:05pm at Adie Knox Arena.
