HAWKS EARN CIS BERTH WITH 2-1 UPSET OVER PATRIOTES
No. 7 UQTR established a 1-0 lead in its home rink when Frederic Lavoie scored at 5:33 of the second period. But Laurier equalized when Vergeer beat Patriotes standout netminder Dany Dallaire at 5:31 on the third and then took the lead for good at 13:26 after Ehrman scored.
Justin Day put in a stellar performance between the pipes for Laurier, stopping 35 of the 36 shots he faced. Dallaire was also busy, making 29 saves on the afternoon.
Laurier was knocked out of the running for the Queen's Cup last weekend when the OUA champion Lakehead Thunderwolves eliminated the Hawks 4-2 in the third game of their best-of-three semi-final series. UQTR had lost two straight to the No. 2 McGill Redmen in the semi-final round. McGill, which lost 4-0 to the Wolves on Saturday night in Thunder Bay, had already earned the berth at Nationals, along with Lakehead.
The 2005/06 season marks the first in which a third OUA berth has been granted to the winner of the single-game elimination format between the two teams knocked out of the semis.
