BADGERS LIGHT LAMP IN TWO STRAIGHT WINS
The Brock Badgers scored 15 goals in two back-to-back wins this week to improve to 4-0-0 and a spot atop the OUA's Mid West Division. Shawn Doucet and Justin Wright each scored twice and George Bradley chipped in three assists as the Badgers defeated the Toronto Varsity Blues 7-3 in St. Catharines Saturday. Matt Harpwood made 27 saves in the win for the Badgers, who scored four times in the third to pull away from the visitors. In Sunday's meeting against the Ryerson Rams, Brock continued the high offensive output, scoring four times in the first period of an 8-3 victory. Jason Harshaw had a hat-trick for Brock, while Jonathon Labelle and Dallas Beaton each had-three point nights. Four other Badgers had two-point games. Tom Lee took over between the pipes and turned away 27 of the 30 shots he faced for the win. Mike Kavanagh and Kevin Krasnowski led the Rams with a goal and an assist each.
The defending OUA champion Lakehead Thunderwolves bounced back from a tough loss to Waterloo last week with a pair of wins over the Windsor Lancers. Rookie defenceman Jarryd bend had four helpers and Shandor Alphonso, Matt Jacques, Mike Wehrstedt, Brad Priestlay, Steve Rawski and Nathan Bruekleman all had a goal and an assist each as the Wolves beat the Lancers 7-3 in their first game Friday. Chris Whitley made 22 saves for Lakehead, who registered 48 shots on the night. Tobias Whelan led the way Saturday scoring two goals and adding two assists as the Wolves beat Windsor 6-2. Whitley made 26 saves for his second consecutive win. The Wolves scored three in the second period to take a 5-1 lead into the second intermission.
The Warriors stayed two points back of the Wolves in the Far West after back-to-back wins over Western in a home-and-home last week. Third-year winger Jordan Brenner scored his first of the season short-handed in overtime to lead Waterloo to a 2-1 win over the Mustangs Thursday in London. Western took a 1-0 lead on a goal from Kevin Richardson at 3:53 of the second period but the Warriors equalized less than five minutes later on a power-play marker by Ryan MacGregor. Curtis Darling turned away 34 of 35 shots faced in the Waterloo goal. Darling gave up first-period goals to Sal Peralta and Kyle Piwowarczyk but the Warriors netminder shut the door the rest of the way as Waterloo scored four unanswered in a 4-2 win at home Saturday. MacGregor added two more, while Chris Golem and David Edgeworth also tallied.
The Ottawa Gee-Gees scored three times in the third period, including the winner by James Smith at 11:27, as they surprised the McGill Redmen 6-5 Tuesday in Montreal. McGill was up 5-3 after 40 minutes but two goals from Kevin Glode and another from Smith helped them earn a tough two points. Glode added an assist, while Ben McLeod also scored twice with a helper. Dan McDonald had three assists and Nick Vernelli chipped in a goal and an assist. For the Redmen, Lucas Madill scored twice and had an assist, while Eric L-Italien tallied once and set up two other goals. Ottawa dropped a 3-2 decision to the Concordia Stingers in their only other game this week. The Stingers built a 2-0 lead on goals from Mike Baslyk and Trevor Blanchard but Ottawa rallied with two in the second to tie the game. Jesse Goodsell scored the winner on the power play at 0:58 of the third, salvaging a win for the Stingers, who were out-shot 39-29. Goalie Sheldon Berg made 37 saves for the win.
Elsewhere around the league, Laurier improved to 3-1-0 with a 6-3 win over RMC Friday and a 5-4 victory over the Queen's Golden Gaels Sunday. Chris DiUbaldo scored two for the Hawks in the Queen's game. Guelph is tied with the Hawks at 3-1-0, behind Brock in the Mid West, after a 4-3 OT win over Queen's and a 2-0 victory over RMC. The York Lions kicked off their week with a 3-1 win over the Rams Wednesday and followed that up with a 2-0 shutout of rival Toronto Thursday. Sean Langdon and Matt Passfield scored first-period goals, while Kevin Druce stopped all 32 Toronto shots in the Lions win. UQTR pounded Concordia 7-1 Wednesday.
