BADGERS EXTEND SERIES WITH 3-2 TRIPLE-OT WIN
7:30 pm.
Waterloo opened the scoring in the game when Alex MacDonell (Ottawa, ON) fired a shot passed Badgers goaltender Tom Lee (Port Perry, ON) at the 16:42 mark of the first period. The power-play goal gave the Warriors a 1-0 lead.
Waterloo would up their lead to two goals in the second period when David Edgeworth (Kingston, ON) tallied a power play-goal of his own.
Later in the second, Ryan Del Monte (Mississauga, ON) tipped in a point shot byGeorge Bradley (Burlington, ON), on the power play, to get the Badgers back to within a goal at 2-1.
About halfway through the third period, the Badgers would draw even when J.J. Martin was able to knock the puck into a gaping net. The power play goal would be the last scored in regulation time and led to a sudden-death overtime period.
In the overtime periods, both teams had many chances to end the game but had those chances slip through their hands. Both teams fought hard and showed the necessary determination it was going to take to win the game. However, it was the Badgers that happened to be the team that got that break and Josh Bonar (Port Alberni, BC) found the back of the net just over a minute into the third overtime period to lift the Badgers to victory and to extend the series to a third a deciding game in Waterloo tomorrow.
Badgers assistant coach, and former Badgers player, Ryan Lounsbury had said that, "The guys battled hard to fight back from at 2-0 deficit." He added that, "They killed off key penalties as well, which gave them a big boost. It was a total team effort from all 20 guys (that we got and need to fight hard for and win this hockey game)."
Both Lee and Waterloo goaltender Curtis Darling (Calgary, AB) played very well and were a large part of the reason the contest made it to a sixth period of play. Again, it was a game that could have went either way with two seemingly equally spirited teams. This was by far the most exciting game the Badgers have played in all year and I am sure one of the most exciting games the Warriors have played in as well. This all leads up to the third and deciding game tomorrow night in Waterloo, which can only hope to live up to the excitement and intensity that was displayed in
tonight's game.
Game time for tomorrow is set for 7:30 pm at the Columbia Ice Field.
