RAMS HOCKEY MAKES WISE MOVE
Graham Wise will step down after 19 seasons as head coach and 12 years as the assistant manager of interuniversity sport at York.
Wise expressed excitement about the move. \"This is an outstanding opportunity and challenge, I am looking forward to getting started,\" he said.
In Ryerson, Wise joins the lowest-ranked team in the country. Last season the Rams posted a 1-21-1 record and missed the playoffs for the third consecutive season.
"Ryerson is a progressive university, steeped in its own tradition; I look forward to joining their team. I firmly believe we can bring success to the hockey program".
Wise was named head coach of York at the beginning of the 1987 season after three seasons as an assistant. The Stoufville, Ont. native had an immediate impact. In his first two seasons he led the team to back-to-back national championships, one of only five coaches in CIS history to accomplish the feat.
His winning ways continued throughout his tenure at York. His teams won the mid-west division in 13 of his 17 seasons including nine of the past 10. His most recent success came in the 2003-04 season when he led York to his fifth OUA title and second consecutive trip to the CIS championships.
"I owe a great deal to York, giving me the opportunity to start my coaching career and allowing me to complete my education,\" Wise said.
Wise played at a high level before joining the coaching ranks. He skated for the Toronto Marlboroughs before four seasons at Michigan Tech. He even earned a try-out with the New York Islanders before returning to Canada and winning a CIS championship with the University of Toronto Varsity Blues.
David Dubois, the program director of sports and recreation at Ryerson, said, \"This is a red-letter day for Ryerson University. The hiring of Graham is another indication of the universities commitment to excellence. This hiring will move our hockey program to a different level".
Terry Haggerty, manager of interuniversity sport at Ryerson, added, "With Graham's hiring this continues our trend of experienced coaches wanting to come to Ryerson."
