LAURIER STAYS ALIVE WITH 4-2 WIN OVER WOLVES
\"I think we played a full 60 minutes tonight. Wednesday night we came out really flat, in the first 10 minutes they were all over us, I don't think we even got a shot on net. Tonight we came out harder off the start and set the tone better,\" said Laurier's Nick Vergeer.
The opening period was highlighted by some great saves made by Hawk goaltender Justin Day to keep the Wolves off the board. The score was 0-0 heading into the first intermission.
Defenceman Dan Ehrman threw his body around, making a couple big hits to help spark the Hawks in the second period. After an open ice body check the Hawks regained possession as Vergeer made a great move past the Thunderwolves defenceman, then made a lead pass to Luke Girard who fed it over to a streaking Richard Colwill on the right wing to help the Hawks draw first blood. Lakehead would reply six minutes later, as Jason Lange, who had a couple of scoring chances earlier in the period, floated a low wrist shot that found its way past Day who was screened, to tie the game 1-1.
The Hawks regained the lead 2:40 into the third period, as a shot from Jordan Fair caromed off the boards causing Whitley to be caught out of position. Evan Weber was at the right place at the right time, slamming the puck in to make it 2-1 Laurier. Thirty-seven seconds later Andre Gill took a pass from Rob Dmytruk and his snapshot made it a 3-1 Golden Hawks lead. The Thunderwolves cut the deficit to one on a harmless looking shot from the point by Erik Lodge beating Day to tighten the game with 9:39 remaining. The Hawks put the game away with 1:15 remaining as James Edgar slammed in the rebound off a Mark Voakes shot.
Head coach Steve Martell praised the top line of Colwill, Vergeer, and Girard. \"They were dominant, they played well and it's our top line. Luke Girard has really evolving into a top player.\"
The third and deciding game of this series comes Sunday night at 7:30 pm at the Waterloo Rec. Complex. A win ensures a berth in the National Championship tournament and the OUA Championship. A loss means that the Hawks will play for the OUA Bronze Medal.
