NO. 10 WESTERN 67, WATERLOO 57
LONDON, Ont. – A big first quarter was enough for the Western Mustangs as they held on to beat the scrappy Waterloo Warriors 67-57 on Feb. 14 at Alumni Hall.
The Mustangs had already clinched a first-round bye in the OUA West playoffs, and finished the regular season with a 17-5 record and a second place finish in the West.
Bess Lennox (Ottawa, Ont.) recorded her 18th double-double of the season, scoring 14 points to go with 12 rebounds. Amanda Anderson (Chatham, Ont.) scored 16 points, while Nadine Paron (Arva, Ont.) added 11 of her own.
Kimberly Lee (Ajax, Ont.) led the Warriors with 16 points and seven rebounds, while Chelsea Brown (London, Ont.) made several big shots to keep Waterloo in the game.
The Mustangs started fast in the first quarter. Melanie Belore (Woodlawn, Ont.) opened the scoring for Waterloo, but Western responded with a quick 7-0 run. Paron knocked down a jumper, and then nailed a three-pointer to spark the Mustangs.
Waterloo couldn't regain the momentum, and Western carried a 21-9 lead into the second quarter.
From there, the game was very even, as the Mustangs kept Waterloo from catching up, while the Warriors showed a lot of heart by keeping the game close.
With Western leading 44-34 in the third quarter, Brittany MacDonald (Toronto, Ont.) nailed a jumper, before hitting a trey to extend the lead.
Brown responded for Waterloo, hitting back-to-back three-pointers, but MacDonald hit a long jumper as time expired, giving Western a 52-42 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Anderson hit two big three-pointers in the fourth, as Western held on for the win.

TORONTO 66, LAURENTIAN 63
TORONTO, Ont. - The Toronto Varsity Blues women's basketball team closed out their 2008-09 regular season with a 66-63 victory over the Laurentian Voyageurs on Saturday at Ben Avery Gym.
With the win, the Varsity Blues finish atop the OUA East standings with a 17-5 record and will host an OUA quarter-final game on Feb. 21, against the lowest-remaining seed after the first OUA playoff round on Feb. 18.
Both teams struggled in the opening quarter, unable to find the touch around the basket. It wasn't until Sherri Pierce (Brampton, Ont.) dropped two of her game-high 15 points with a lay-up over Darrah Bumstead (New Hamburg, Ont.) that the Blues offence finally ignited.
Toronto went on to score 12-unanswered points, leaving Laurentian pointless until the 1:29 mark, and held a comfortable 16-2 lead after the first quarter.
The Voyageurs picked it up in the second quarter, hitting three-pointers and picking up their defensive play. However, the Blues went on a short run in the final minute and held a 13-point lead (34-21) at the half.
Laurentian continued to close the gap in the third quarter despite a stellar performance from third-year guard Erin McNeely (Kingston, Ont.). The Blues were up 47-41 going into the final frame.
The fourth quarter saw both sides trading baskets as Laurentian pushed hard at both ends of the court in an effort to pull ahead. The Voyageurs were able to pull the game within three, however, that would be as close as they would get as the Blues recorded their 13th consecutive win.
Pierce and Nicki Schutz (Toronto, Ont.) led the Blues with 15 points apiece, while fourth-year veteran Alaine Hutton (Hamilton, Ont.) added 14 points in the victory.
Bumstead recorded a double-double for the Voyageurs, with a game-high 17 points and 16 boards, while Kauri Lafontaine (Whitby, Ont.) recorded 11 points in the loss.
