OUA W-BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: NO. 2 LANCERS SURVIVE OVERTIME SCARE BY RAMS
The Rams played Windsor tight all game and at one point, the Lancers found themselves down by one with less than one minute to play.
After tying the game and sending it into the extra frame, Windsor dominated the Rams offensively and defensively to come away with the win.
Windsor outshot the Rams from the floor 47 to 32 percent. They also out-rebounded Ryerson 36-29.
Jessica Clemencon (France) led Lancers offensively with a game-high 26 points. Three other Lancers scored in double digits including Shavaun Reaney (Sherwood Park, Alta.) with 14, Emily Abbott (Calgary) with 11 and Bojana Kovacevic (Windsor, Ont.) with 10.
LAURIER 80, LAURENTIAN 67
At Wilfrid Laurier, five Golden Hawks hit double digits in an 80-67 win over the Laurentian Lady Vees.
Both teams started out the match by trading the lead until the 4:50 mark of the first when Laurier started to build a small six point lead to end the quarter up 20-14. Laurier's Mallory Kohlmeier (Sarnia, Ont.) hit a key three-pointer to get the Hawks back on track and by half the purple and gold held a 39-32 advantage.
The beginning of the third was all Golden Hawks as they extended their lead to 13 on the back of their excellent three-point shooting. The visitors outscored the Hawks 21-18 in the fourth, but it was too little, too late as Laurier picked up their third win of the season and second straight.
The Hawks were led by fourth-year guard Renata Adamczyk (Greensville, Ont.) who had a 17 point effort. She was followed by Kohlmeier and Christa Mancino (Brantford, Ont.) who both had 12 and Amber Hillis (Hamilton, Ont.) and Christine MacDonald (Brantford, Ont.) who had 10. Megan Grant (Thunder Bay, Ont.) led all players with 13 boards in the match.
For the Lady Vees, Lisa Furchner (Sudbury, Ont.) had a game high 19 points while Darrah Bumstead (New Hamburg, Ont.) picked up a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
GUELPH 68, RMC 62
At RMC, the Guelph Gryphons defeated the Paladins 68-62 in Kingston, Ont. to secure their first victory of the season.
A poor first half defensive effort by the Gryphons, enabled RMC to go into the halftime break with a 42-36 lead.
In the third quarter, Guelph woke up and held RMC to just seven points including just one field goal, while they netted 19. Erasing the six point halftime deficit, the Gryphons entered the fourth quarter up 55-49.
Jasmine Douglas (Guelph, Ont.) lead Guelph with a big double-double of 26 points and 10 rebounds. Instrumental to the Guelph victory was the second-half play of Samantha Russell (Paradise Valley, Ariz.). Refusing to lose, Russell pulled down ten rebounds, netted 13 points, and virtually every Gryphon score went through her hands.
Rookies Marlee Freeman (Orillia, Ont.) and Jaime Green (Guelph, Ont.) stepped up huge with eight and seven points respectively, and great defence, enabling Guelph to pull out the win.
Carley Lewis (Halifax) led RMC with 20 points followed by Stephanie Stone (Kingston, Ont.) with 18.
WESTERN 84, TORONTO 67
At Toronto, the Western Mustangs were looking to finish the interlock portion of league play on a good note Saturday in Toronto, and did so, defeating the Varsity Blues 84-67.
Western came out firing from the opening tip hitting a barrage of three-pointers to move out to a 27-17 lead after the first quarter.
The Mustangs continued their hot shooting throughout the second half and held a commanding 18-point lead at the break. Rookie Beckie Williams (London, Ont.) had a sensational first half scoring 14 points to lead the purple and white.
Determined not to let Toronto back into the game, Western increased their lead to 28 in the fourth quarter and took control of the game en route to the 84-67 finish.
The Mustangs were led by Amanda Anderson (Chatham, Ont.) who netted 16 points, while Williams, Lauren Parkes (London, Ont.) added 15, and 14 points respectively while Katelyn Leddy (London, Ont.) notched a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
CARLETON 71, MCMASTER 63
At McMaster, the Carleton Ravens extended their win streak to four games, defeating the Marauders 71-63 on the road Saturday night.
The first quarter was a close one, with Carleton leading by a basket, the second quarter belonged to the Ravens. They increased their lead thanks in part to fourth year guard Courtney Smith (Ottawa) who scored a game-high 19 points. The Ravens outscored the Marauders 24-10 giving them a 42-26 lead at the half.
The third quarter was McMaster's highest scoring quarter as they netted 23 points. The Marauders were really pressuring for the comeback in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Ravens 14-11 but it was too little too late and the Ravens came out victorious.
Along with Smith, Ravens guards Alyson Bush (Ottawa) and Jennifer Stoqua (Ottawa) also reached double digits for Carleton, netting 12 points each. Ines Jelic (London, Ont.) dominated the boards, grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds.
Taylor Chiarot (Hamilton, Ont.) contributed 18 points to lead the way for McMaster. Three other Marauders hit double digits. Nicole Rosenkranz (Niagara Falls, Ont.) and Taylor Smith (Hamilton, Ont.) scored 11 points each, while Rebecca Rewi (Ancaster, Ont.) had 10. Rosenkranz led McMaster on the boards, with nine rebounds.
LAKEHEAD 58, OTTAWA 52
At Lakehead, the Thunderwolves defeated the Ottawa Gee-Gees 58-52 on Saturday night at the C.J. Sanders Fieldhouse.
Point guard Tasia McKenna (Timberlea, N.S.) was the star for the Thunderwolves, pouring in 22 points while going 4-of-8 from the three-point zone. Her five assists rounded out a nice game on the offensive end.
Sarah Gordon (Halifax) provided a spark off the bench with 10 points including three three-pointers while Lindsay Druery (Smithville, Ont.) had a near double-double with nine points and eight rebounds.
The Gee-Gees were led by Emilie Morasse (Quebec City) who connected on 17 points while post Hannah Sunley-Paisley (Toronto) had a strong second half and finished with 16 points and nine rebounds.
WATERLOO 62, YORK 52
At Waterloo, the York Lions played a tough game against the host Warriors, as Waterloo won 62-52.
Laurier came flying out of the gate and had a commanding 18-point lead at the half. They increased that lead even more in the third quarter to put the game out of reach. The Lions had their best quarter in the fourth with 16 points but it was not enough on this night.
Rookie Nadia Qahwash (Kitchener, Ont.) and Brittany Szockyj (Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont.) led the charge for York, combining for 24 points (14 and 10, respectively).
Waterloo's Laura Becotte (Thunder Bay, Ont.) contributed 18 points and 13 rebounds to the Warriors win, while Erin Button (Stouffville, Ont.) added 11 points and eight rebounds.
QUEEN'S 71, BROCK 58
At Queen's, a 19-9 third quarter run blew open a tie game as the Gaels upset the Brock Badgers 71-58 Saturday night at Bartlett Gym.
The Badgers were led by the three point shooting of Emily McKay (Toronto) while Queen's countered with some excellent play by Katie Guthrie (Orillia, Ont.). The result led to the teams being knotted at 37 through two quarters.
In the second half, the Gaels began to take control of the game, with Brittany Moore (Hannon, Ont.) leading the charge for Queen's. Moore made the Badgers pay for some weak defensive zone coverage as she converted on a number of open looks to put the Gaels in front by 10 after three quarters.
The final quarter saw the Badgers make the run, and eventually cut the lead to four. However, the Gaels would prove to be the better team on this night as they walked away with their fifth win of the season.
Guthrie was a difference maker for the Gaels scoring 14 points and grabbing 12 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Moore led all scorers with 21 points while Christine Wallace (North Gower, Ont.) also had a double-double (10 points and 10 rebounds).
WINDSOR 71, TORONTO 64
At Toronto, a fourth-quarter surge lifted the No. 2 Windsor Lancers over the Varsity Blues 71-64 on Friday night.
Windsor got 15 fourth-quarter points from their scoring leaders Jessica Clemencon (France) and Bojana Kovacevic (Windsor, Ont.) , to help the visitors outscore the home squad 20-7 in the final 10 minutes and erase a six-point third-quarter deficit.
Windsor had four players in double figures in the win. Kovacevic and guard Laura Mullins (Windsor, Ont.) each had 15 points, while Clemencon added 14 and Shavaun Reaney (Sherwood Park, Alta.) tallied 13. Kovacevic also had a game-high 13 rebounds.
For Toronto, Nicki Schutz (Toronto) led all players in points and had a team-high eight rebounds.
WESTERN 69, RYERSON 76
At Ryerson, despite trailing 43-40 to the Rams at the half, the Western Mustangs took a third-quarter lead and held on for a 79-76 win on the road in a see-saw battle.
Amanda Anderson (Chatham, Ont.) led the Mustangs with 23 points and two assists, while Lauren Parkes (London, Ont.) was clutch down the stretch, scoring the winning basket and adding 16 points and eight rebounds.
Western shot 50 percent from the field - Parkes alone was 63 percent going 5-of-8.
Katelyn Leddy (London, Ont.) added 12 points and three boards. Lisa Goldring (Burlington, Ont.) had 22 points to lead Ryerson, while Jenny Hobbs (Burlington, Ont.) added 18 points and eight rebounds and Angela Tilk (Welland, Ont.) chipped in with 16 Rams points along with seven boards.
OTTAWA 58, MCMASTER 55
At McMaster, despite overcoming a 10-point halftime deficit, the Marauders fell 58-55 to the visiting Ottawa Gee-Gees on Friday night.
After a slow first quarter, Ottawa got the first basket of the second quarter from Kayte Chase (Cornwall, Ont.). It was quickly followed by a Marauder basket from Taylor Chiarot (Hamilton, Ont.). Ottawa then had a 9-0 run to go ahead 25-10 at 5:14.
A pair of Chiarot free throws followed by a Nicole Rosenkranz (Niagara Falls, Ont.) basket cut the Gee-Gees lead to six at 8:43 in the third quarter. Hannah Sunley-Paisley (Toronto) got the Gee-Gees first basket at 7:43. This set the pattern for the rest of the quarter. The closest McMaster could get was four points, but that was it. The third quarter ended with the Gee-Gees still having a 10-point lead, 41-31.
A pair of Rebecca Rewi (Ancaster, Ont.) free throws opened the scoring in the fourth quarter. Taylor Smith pulled McMaster to within four with her three at 1:36. Rewi's single from the line made the final score 58-55.
Lisa Marie Iavarone (Hamilton, Ont.) had a game-high 15 points and six rebounds. Chiarot scored 12 points while playing excellent defence against Sunley-Paisley. Taylor Smith added 11 points and five assists.
For the Gee-Gees, Emilie Morasse (Quebec City) was top scorer with 12 points. Sunley-Paisley had a double-double, 11 points and 13 rebounds as well as seven assists. Chase finished with 10 points.
CARLETON 74, LAKEHEAD 69, OT
At Lakehead, the Carleton Ravens got an important win on the road Friday night as they defeated the Thunderwolves 74-69 in extra time.
The Ravens had a narrow 11-9 lead at the end of the first quarter and came away with a 27-22 lead at the half.
But, the fourth quarter belonged to the Thunderwolves as they rallied to get themselves back in the game. They outscored the Ravens 25-11 to force extra time. But, the Ravens regained their composure and fought back to earn the well-deserved 74-69 victory, marking their third straight win.
Second-year guard Kendall MacLeod (Brockville, Ont.) had another solid game for the Ravens, netting a game-high 16 points and grabbing a team-high six rebounds. Ashleigh Cleary (Kemptville, Ont.) and Alyson Bush (Ottawa) also reached double digits, scoring 15 and 14 points respectively.
Five different Thunderwolves hit double digits. They were led by Shannan Vellinga (Thunder Bay, Ont.), who netted 14. Georgia Harvey (Winnipeg), Chiaki Nakamura (Nagasaki, Japan), Lindsay Druery (Smithville, Ont.) and Tasia McKenna (Timberlea, N.S.) had 13 points each.
LAURIER 67, YORK 42
At Wilfrid Laurier, Renata Adamczyk (Greensville, Ont.) picked up 20 points and 10 rebounds as the Golden Hawks rolled to a 67-42 win over the visiting York Lions.
The Hawks opened up the game by going on a seven-point streak to force the visitors to call a timeout. By the end of the first, Laurier held a 23-11 lead. The home team continued to pressure the Lions into making mistakes and went into half with a 36-18 advantage.
In the third, both teams had trouble finding the basket with Laurier scoring 10 and the Lions putting down eight. Laurier had a better final quarter, with 21 points scored, while York had their best of the game scoring 16.
Adamczyk notched her second double-double of the season scoring 20 points and 10 rebounds. She had her last double-double against the Ryerson Rams on Nov. 7. Three other Hawks picked up eight points in their second win of the season including Mallory Kohlmeier (Sarnia, Ont.), Christa Mancino (Port Colborne, Ont.) and Kandice Baptiste (Shannonville, Ont.).
The Lions were led by Nadia Qahwash (Kitchener, Ont.) who had 14 points on the night and Brittany Szockyj (Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont.) who picked up 10 in the loss. Szockyj was also York's top rebounder with eight.
LAURENTIAN 88, WATERLOO 69
At Waterloo, the Laurentian Lady Vees earned a 88-69 road win over the Warriors.
Leading the way was Darrah Bumstead (New Hamburg, Ont.) who had a game high 23 points and eight rebounds. Lisa Furchner (Sudbury, Ont.) would grab a double-double bagging 14 points and 12 rebounds. Kauri Lafontaine (Whitby, Ont.) would have the hot hand going 5-of-8 from behind the arc and adding 15 points. Laura Becotte (Thunder Bay, Ont.) would lead the way with 14 points for Waterloo in a losing effort.
Laurentian and Waterloo would duke it out in the first quarter as neither team seemed to be able to get the upper hand on their opponent. They would go into the quarter break with Laurentian in lead 24-21. The second quarter was quite the opposite to the first, where both teams relied on their defence as the two would combine for 22 points, 13-9 in favour of Laurentian as they would take a 37-30 lead into half time.
The second half saw the Lady Vees begin to pull away from the Warriors. The turning point was three consecutive three pointers by Lafontaine, which helped Laurentian, extend their lead to 14 points after three quarters by a score of 60-46. The final quarter would bring the best of both teams in a high scoring thriller as Laurentian would take the game 88-69.
QUEEN'S 61, GUELPH 48
At Queen's, the Gaels defeated the struggling Guelph Gryphons by a 61-48 count.
Led by Brittany Moore (Hannon, Ont.) and Erin Skippon (Surrey, B.C.), Queen's jumped out to a seven-point halftime lead and didn't look back. The Gaels came out of the half with a 20-7 third quarter thanks to solid play from fifth-year guard Katie Guthrie (Orillia, Ont.), who finished with nine points in 30 minutes. Moore led the team with 15 points.
Guelph was unable to put together much offence until the fourth quarter, but at that point it was too late. Jasmine Douglas (Guelph, Ont.) provided the most energy for the Gryphons, finishing with 12 points and nine boards, and two blocks.
BROCK 95, RMC 45
At RMC, the Brock Badgers rolled past the Paladins by the score of 95-45 Friday night on the road.
Leading the way for the Badgers was Whitney Gorges (Welland, Ont.) who led all scorers with a season-high 20 points going 7-for-13 from the field.
Emily McKay (Toronto) contributed with 15 points and four steals. Britt Pegg (Weyburn, Sask.) and Jessica Del Signore (Brantford, Ont.) both added 14 points each. Pegg also recorded six rebounds, four steals and three assists while Del Signore knocked down 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. Lauren Stewart (Hamilton, Ont.) rounded out the Brock leaders finishing with 10 points and four assists in the victory.
For RMC Carley Lewis (Halifax.) and Abby Edmison (Carleton Place, Ont.) recorded 14 points each in the loss.
