OUA W-BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: LANCERS, BADGERS REMAIN UNDEFEATED
The Lancers jumped out to a 10-point lead in the first quarter and extended to a 37-23 halftime lead against the Ravens.
The second half was a hard fought defensive battle as neither team was able to build any momentum at the offensive end.
Windsor got their scoring from guards Shavaun Reaney (Sherwood Park, Alta.) and Laura Mullins (Windsor, Ont.) who helped lead their team to the victory, while Carleton's high scorers included Ashleigh Cleary (Kemptville, Ont.) with 10 points and Alyson Bush (Ottawa) with nine points.
In the victory, Reaney led all scorers with 16 points and three steals while Mullins added 14 points and three rebounds. Iva Peklova (Prague) also added nine rebounds in the victory.
OTTAWA 81, WESTERN 77
At Ottawa, after a less than spectacular first quarter, the Gee-Gees found their stride the rest of the game as they won their home opener 81-77 over the previously undefeated Western Mustangs on Friday.
Things weren't looking too good for uOttawa in the opening frame as the Mustangs jumped out a 25-11 lead but the Gee-Gees responded well in the next quarter. The Gee-Gees outscored the opposition 23-12 and headed to their dressing rooms with the Mustangs up 37-34.
From there the two teams battled back and forth with uOttawa taking their first lead of the contest 64-63 with 6:38 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Ottawa shut down the Mustangs offence over the final minutes of the game outscoring their OUA West opponents 17-14.
Western's scoring came courtesy of Amanda Anderson (Chatham, Ont.), who went for 22 points and Rebecca Moss (Waterloo, Ont.) and Beckie Williams (London, Ont.) with 14 points each.
Ottawa's high scorers included Emilie Morasse (Quebec City) with 26 points and Hannah Sunley-Paisley (Toronto) with 24.
RYERSON 84, LAKEHEAD 79
At Lakehead, the Ryerson Rams overcame a 16-point fourth quarter deficit to defeat the Thunderwolves 84-79 in overtime on Friday night.
Ashley MacDonald's (Port Colborne, Ont.) eight three-pointers and game-high 28 points were the difference for the Rams as they came back in the final quarter to tie the game at 72 at the end of regulation. Lisa Goldring (Burlington, Ont.) and Angela Tilk (Welland, Ont.) were also effective for Ryerson as both players scored 19 points.
Tasia McKenna (Timberlea, N.S.) had 27 points to lead the Thunderwolves, while Georgia Harvey (Winnipeg) sunk 16 points with four three-pointers. Sarah Gordon (Halifax) added a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.
After a back and forth, high paced first half that saw many lead changes, Lakehead went up 40-36 behind a strong second quarter defensive effort. Ryerson outscored Lakehead 31-19 in the fourth quarter, dropping a barrage of points in the final four minutes by MacDonald, Tilk and Goldring. Lakehead was up by three with seconds to go before MacDonald hit a 26-footer off the bank to send the game to an extra session.
After overtime buckets from MacDonald and Tilk, the Rams clinched the win at the free throw line.
LAURIER 74, RMC 43
At Wilfrid Laurier, the Golden Hawks picked up their first victory of the 2009 campaign as they defeated the RMC Paladins 74-43 on Friday.
Three Hawks were in double digits as the Golden Hawks showed their strongest offensive game of the season. Renata Adamczyk (Greensville, Ont.), Mallory Kohlmeier (Sarnia, Ont.) and Aimee Van Dam (Winnipeg) netted 14, 13 and 10 points respectively.
Laurier opened strong on a 15-0 run led by Aleksa Brkic (Mississauga, Ont.) with seven of those points and eventually finished the first up 22-9. By the half Laurier was up 40-14 on the winless Paladins.
The Golden Hawks took advantage of sloppy play by the Paladins as 28 points stemmed from 26 turnovers in the contest.
Stephanie Stone (Kingston, Ont.) led the Paladins with 20 points including two three-point baskets.
QUEEN'S 59, WATERLOO 51
At Waterloo, Katie Guthrie (Orillia, Ont.), had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds in the Queen's Gaels 59-51 victory over the Warriors on Friday.
The Gaels had a shaky start to the game, ending the first quarter 10 points behind with a score of 20-10. The Gaels were out to prove they were better than that in the second quarter, however, and outscored the Warriors 20-5, ending the half with a 10-point lead.
After taking the lead the Gaels never looked back and finished the game with a final score of 59-51.
The win was truly a team effort, with three members of the team scoring 12 points. Brittany Moore (Hannon, Ont.), and Maddie Soye (Waterloo, Ont.) were the other two players to contribute 12 points. Erin Skippon (Kelowna, B.C.), was a presence in the low post all game and collected nine points and 13 rebounds.
BROCK 74, LAURENTIAN 57
At Laurentian, the Brock Badgers came out flying in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Lady Vees 22-6 in the final 10 minutes en route to a 74-57 road victory on Friday.
Once again the Badgers full press caused problems as the Lady Vees ran out of gas in the final quarter. Brock forced 32 Laurentian turnovers despite being out-rebounded 44-29.
Brock had four players in double figures led by senior Whitney Gorges (Welland, Ont.) who led all scorers with 17 points including three treys.
Britt Pegg (Weyburn, Sask.) contributed with 14 points, five rebounds and five assists. Hillary Woodside (Fall River, N.S.) added 13 points which was highlighted by a three-pointer from 10 feet outside the arc at the end of the third quarter to give the Badgers a 52-51 lead. Lauren Stewart (Hamilton, Ont.) rounded out the Brock leaders finishing with 11 points in the victory.
Leading the Laurentian offence was Lisa Furchner (Sudbury, Ont.) who recorded 14 points and six rebounds. Katie Goggins (Hanmer, Ont.) added 11 points and 11 rebounds for the double-double.
YORK 72, GUELPH 71
At York, the Lions got off to a strong start this weekend as they defeated the Guelph Gryphons 72-71 at Tait McKenzie Centre.
York's Emma Dillon (Aurora, Ont.) put the first points on the board, and the Lions continued to lead the Gryphons 18-10 in the first quarter.
The second quarter saw the Gryphons return to the court with a renewed vigour as they outscored the Lions 22-9. However, the Lions weren't finished as they began closing the gap in the second half.
With 11 points in the final quarter from York's talented rookie Nadia Qahwash (Kitchener, Ont.), and several well-executed plays by Brittany Szockyj (Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont.), the Lions were able to come from behind to force the game into overtime with a 61-61 draw.
The Lions went into overtime playing aggressively and built a seven-point lead over the Gryphons. However, Guelph responded with an offensive attack that had the teams tied once again, until Alex Russell drained a three-pointer to put the Gryphons ahead in the final minute.
In that remaining minute, Szockyj powered through the Gryphons for a last minute basket that would put the Lions only a point behind. With 10 seconds left in overtime, the Lions were battling hard when Kate Mowat (North York, Ont.) was fouled driving to the rim and awarded two free throws. Mowat performed beautifully under the pressure and onlookers went wild as she sank both of them for the win.
QUEEN'S 71, LAURIER 59
At Wilfrid Laurier, Erin Skippon (Kelowna, B.C.), had 22 points, nine rebounds and five steals in the Gaels 71-59 victory over the Golden Hawks on Saturday.
The game was a tight match for much of the first half, with the Gaels having only a two-point lead at the end of two quarters of play. By the end of the third quarter, their lead had been slimmed to one. The Gaels came out to finally put the game away in the fourth quarter as they outscored the Golden Hawks 22-11, giving them their second consecutive victory.
Skippon contributed both offensively with 22 points, and defensively with eight defensive rebounds and five steals. Katie Guthrie (Orillia, Ont.), continued her strong performance this season scoring 16 points and pulling down four rebounds. Brittany Moore (Hannon, Ont.), also had 10 points.
WINDSOR 70, OTTAWA 53
At Ottawa, the Windsor Lancers continued their hot start to the season with an impressive 70-53 victory over the Gee-Gees on Saturday night.
The Lancers jumped all over the home team early on, as they scored 28 points in the opening quarter and led 28-15 after one.
The Gee-Gees got back in the game in the second quarter as they held Windsor to only six points in the quarter to cut the lead to 34-28 at half.
In the second half, the Lancers re-established their dominance at the offensive end of the court as they outscored the Gee-Gees 36-25 en route to the 70-53 victory.
The Lancers got an impressive performance from rookie post Jessica Clemencon (St. Rambert, France) who finished with 26 points on 8-of-11 shooting and 10-of-11 from the free throw line.
Ottawa's high scorer of the game was Hannah Sunley-Paisley (Toronto) with 18 points and 12 total rebounds, including seven on offence and six on defence.
Bojana Kovacevic (Windsor, Ont.) finished with 14 points and six rebounds while Shavaun Reaney (Sherwood Park, Alta.) chipped in with 11 points and three assists.
MCMASTER 76, RYERSON 48
At McMaster, the Marauders improved on their record this weekend with a 76-48 win over the Ryerson Rams.
The game was all McMaster, all the time from beginning to end. Going up 18-13 after the first quarter, the Marauders entered the second half with a 37-22 lead.
McMaster continued to dominate in the third and fourth frames, outscoring Ryerson in every quarter.
Ryerson's Ashley MacDonald (Port Colborne, Ont.) had a game-leading 16 points.
The win was a true team effort as scoring contributions came from five players in the double-digits. Nicole Rosenkranz (Niagara Falls, Ont.) earned 14 points, while Rebecca Rewi (Ancaster, Ont.) added 13. Taylor Smith (Hamilton, Ont.) and Jaklynn Nimec (Binbrook, Ont.) had 12 points each on the game and Taylor Chiarot (Hamilton, Ont.) netted 10.
WATERLOO 69, RMC 37
At Waterloo, the Warriors notched their first win of the season over the struggling Royal Military College Paladins 69-37 on Saturday.
The Warriors had no trouble fending off the Paladins, outscoring them in every quarter, including a first-quarter finish of 13-1 and held each scoring player to single digits.
Waterloo's Stephanie Shea (Vancouver) led the team in points with 15, while teammate Laura Becotte (Thunder Bay, Ont.) contributed 12 to the Warrior win.
LAURENTIAN 72, GUELPH 52
At Laurentian, the Lady Vees defeated the Guelph Gryphons by a score of 72-52 on Saturday at Ben Avery Gym in Sudbury, Ont.
Kauri Lafontaine (Whitby, Ont.) paved the way for the Lady Vees amassing 21 points and seven assists. Also helping the Lady Vees to victory was Lisa Furchner (Sudbury, Ont.) with 15 points and one assist. Alex Russell (Paradise Valley Ariz.) played well for the Gryphons contributing 19 points and two assists.
The Lady Vees were strong on the boards and generated lots of second chance baskets but trailed at the end of the first frame by a score of 17-19.
Laurentian opened the scoring in the second quarter and quickly regained the lead. The Lady Vees also tightened up their defence in the second quarter and held the Gryphons to just six points. Having scored 18 in the frame, the Lady Vees worked themselves into a 10 point lead entering half time.
The Gryphons brought the lead down to five at one point in the third; however, the Lady Vees were able to get the rebounds from the Gryphons shots and began to rebuild their lead.
Laurentian came out strong in the fourth and started to build on their 14-point lead. The Lady Vees scored 17 fourth quarter points and won the game by 20 with a final score of 72-52.
BROCK 73, YORK 46
At York, the Brock Badgers extended their regular season win streak to four games as they rolled past the Lions by the score of 73-46 on Saturday.
The Badgers led by two points at the half 28-26, before outscoring the Lions 27-9 in the third quarter to take a commanding 55-35 lead after 30 minutes. Brock's defence kept York to just 20 points in the second half as they shot a dismal 26 percent (13-of-50) from the field for the game.
Sophomore Jessica Del Signore (Brantford, Ont.) had a career performance registering a career-high 27 points which included tying the Badgers single game record for three-pointers in a game with seven as she was an impressive 7-of-8 from beyond the arc.
York's Kayla Pangos (Holland Landing, Ont.) gave the Lions a team-high of 17 points in the game, while Kate Mowat (Whitby, Ont.) contributed 10 total rebounds, 5 on either side of the ball.
Brock's Whitney Gorges (Welland, Ont.) and Britt Pegg (Weyburn, Sask.) both contributed with 13 points and seven rebounds each in the victory.
WESTERN 67, CARLETON 63
Western earned a split of weekend games after defeating the Carleton Ravens 67-63 in women's basketball at the Ravens' Nest on Sunday.
Rebecca Moss (Waterloo, Ont.) led Western with 19 points.
Western, which scored 25 first-quarter points, only scored eight points in the second quarter, allowing the defensive-minded Ravens to claw back into the game and lead 45-33 at the half.
The Mustangs came back in the second half, refocused and despite trailing 56-49 going into the fourth quarter, their defensive game frustrated the Ravens, forcing missed shots.
Western took a late lead, 66-63, with 20 seconds left to play, and forced a missed three-pointer to secure the win.
Other double-digit scorers for Western included Amanda Anderson (Chatham, Ont.) with 11 and Lauren Parkes (London, Ont.) with 10.
