DEGROOT COMMITS TO HUSKIES
SASKATOON, Sask. - The University of Saskatchewan women's basketball squad is pleased to welcome former two-time All-Canadian Lindsay DeGroot as the newest player to don the green and white.
The five-foot-10 guard will join the Huskies for the 2009-10 season after playing four seasons with the McMaster Marauders. She will make the transfer to move into graduate studies in Kinesiology – Exercise Psychology. An injury forced DeGroot sit out the 2008-09 season with the Marauders.
"The Huskies have everything I'm looking for in a basketball program," said DeGroot, who was on hand at the CIS Championship watching the Huskies. "From the work ethic, motivation and cohesiveness to the coaches and players - this team prides itself on hard work and I'm looking forward to being challenged everyday. I'm very fortunate to have the opportunity to be coached by Lisa (Thomaidis) and the rest of the coaching staff, I know I will learn so much next year. And my future teammates are all great girls who are very dedicated and passionate about the game."
It was in the last two seasons that DeGroot, a native of Thedford, Ont., really made her presence known in the CIS. In 2007-08, She finished the season third in CIS scoring with 18.9 points per game, was named the OUA West Division Player of the Year, an OUA First Team All-Star, as well as a CIS First Team All-Canadian all for the second season in a row and represented Canada at the 2007 Summer Universiade in Thailand. To top the personal accomplishments off, McMaster claimed the OUA Championship and a CIS bronze medal. She was also a BLG award nominee for the CIS Female Athlete of the Year in 2007-08. In 2005-06, she also helped the Marauders to an OUA championship.
In her recruiting year, DeGroot received scholarship offers from more than 50 universities before electing to attend Eastern Michigan in the fall of 2003. After a successful freshman season in the NCAA where she averaged 12 minutes per game, DeGroot decided to return to Ontario and McMaster University. She sat out the 2004-05 season due to CIS transfer rules.
"We couldn't be more thrilled about Lindsay's decision to come to the U of S next year," said Huskies head coach Thomaidis. "She is a phenomenal basketball player and more importantly, a wonderful person. What she has already accomplished in her career at McMaster is unbelievable. The impact that she will have on our team will most-certainly be immediate as she has remarkable leadership skills and a magnetic personality. I feel very privileged to get the opportunity to coach her next season."
DeGroot will move to Saskatoon in May and will open her first season in the Canada West in late-October.
