ARBEAU AND AISTON LIFT LAURIER TO A PAIR OF WINS

The defending champion Laurier Golden Hawks won back-to-back games this week as they beat the Guelph Gryphons 2-1 Wednesday and the Waterloo Warriors 2-1 Thursday. In the first game, both teams were held scoreless after two periods but fifth-year forward Lindsay Arbeau scored twice in the third to lift the Golden Hawks to the win. She has three goals on the season. Laurier out shot Guelph 38-17, including a 15-6 margin in the third period. Kirsten Trost made 16 saves for the Golden Hawks, while her counterpart Aleisha Lusk had a busier night with 36 stops. Arden Sullivan scored for Guelph. Ottawa native Fiona Aiston scored both goals in Laurier’s win over the Warriors. Julianne Schmalz had the Waterloo goal. Second-year Gryphon Nicole Latreille had a hat-trick as rebounded Guelph to defeat the Brock Badgers 3-0 Sunday. Lusk made 37 saves for the shutout.

The York Lions remained undefeated after four games after picking up a 2-1 overtime win against the Windsor Lancers Saturday and tying the Western Mustangs 3-3 Sunday. Windsor tied the game 1-1 in the second period on a goal from Lauren Swartz but the Lions were able to pull it out in the extra frame. Michelle Guy and Amanda Cole had a goal and an assist each for York, while goaltender Melanie Quinn, last week’s OUA female athlete of the week, had another stellar performance with 37 saves. Quinn had to leave the Western game with an injury after the first period, saving 10 of 11 shots sent her way. She was replaced by Megan Slumskie, who allowed two goals on 36 shots. Western scored both of those goals in the third to pull even. Melinda Casselman and Amy Groen had a goal and an assist each for Western, while Lisa MacDonald scored the other goal. Cole, Dorothy Aniuk and Stacey Hornburg scored for York. Rookie blueliner Karen Wiltshire added two assists.

Michelle Curtis scored twice for Waterloo as they earned their first win of the season by beating the Mustangs 3-2 Saturday. Warriors goalie Alexis Huber made 29 saves for the win.
