BROCK'S ALLGOOD NETS THREE IN SEASON OPENER
Brock centre Kate Allgood started the women’s hockey season with a bang as she scored all three of the Badgers’ goals in a 3-2 win over the Western Mustangs Friday. Western held a 2-1 lead entering the first intermission but Allgood, a third-year Toronto native, added a goal in the second period and then another with less than a minute remaining in regulation to earn Brock the dramatic come-from-behind win. All-Star defender Melissa Miller assisted on all three of Allgood’s goals. Brock did have a tougher time with the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks the next night, dropping a 6-2 decision to the defending CIS champions. Six different players scored for Laurier, including Kate Psota, who had the winner at 16:35 of the second period. Laurissa Kenworthy had a goal and an assist and Lauren Barch added three helpers. Second-year goaltender Morgan Wielgosz made 14 saves to notch her first win of the season in the Golden Hawks’ net.
New Windsor head coach Todd Lalonde began his tenure Lancers on the right note as Windsor got a road win, defeating the Waterloo Warriors 2-1 at the Columbia Ice Fields. Windsor followed that up with a 0-0 draw with the York Lions. Melanie Quinn starred in that game for York. Quinn, a fourth-year veteran from Newmarket, made 37 saves for the shut-out. Quinn had made 30 saves the previous night as York got its first win of the year, a 2-1 victory over the Queen’s Golden Gaels. Laura McLean and Jennifer Kramar scored for the Lions, while Chantelle Johnson had the only goal for Queen’s. The Golden Gaels finished the weekend’s play at 0-2-0 after losing 4-1 to the Guelph Gryphons Saturday. Elysia Desmier scored twice for Guelph in their first action of the season.
