HESLIN LEADS HAWKS TO WIN IN OPENER

Heslin of Bolton, Ont., a checking-line specialist who is more used to shutting down other team's big guns, had never scored two goals in a playoff contest in her three years with the Hawks. The 5-foot-8 forward came through with her team's first two markers of the night to earn player-of-the-game honours for the winning side.
Laurier out shot Dalhousie 44-14 in the game, including 15-0 in the opening frame, but was holding on to a 3-2 lead when assistant-captain Laurissa Kenworthy of Newmarket, Ont. finally put the match away with the insurance marker with two minutes and 12 seconds left on the clock.
Tiger netminder Kristen Ladouceur, a junior from Munster, Ont. was stellar between the pipes for that Atlantic conference finalists and was named player of the game in the losing cause.
Laurier head coach Rick Osborne, though happy with the win, said he's glad the team is heading into practice tomorrow. No. 1 Laurier (1-0) will enjoy a day off on Friday before taking on the fourth-seeded McGill Martlets (0-0) Saturday at 4 p.m. Atlantic Time.
"I didn't think the flow was there for us early one. The team was out-of-sync," commented Osborne. "We had a lot more shots, but I don't think the quality of shots was there."
Osborne, who has led the Hawks to three straight OUA conference titles, pointed out Dalhousie had a chance to win right up to the end.
"It wasn't a sharp game for us. I take my hat off to Dalhousie. They forced a very erratic game. We're usually a steady team."
Tigers head coach Lesley Jordan, named CIS coach of the year on Wednesday, conceded nerves got the better of her squad early on, in their first-ever appearance at the CIS tournament.
"We were doing a lot of watching in the first period. We got more comfortable as the game went on," said the fourth-year Tiger bench boss. "They were everything we expected. They play well as a team."
Though not happy with the loss, Jordan added she feels good about the way the team finished, to be only down 3-2 against the number-one seed with a couple of minutes remaining. She of course gave kudos to Ladouceur "without whom we might not have stayed within striking distance until the end."
Laurier drew first blood 4:31 into the game when Heslin found the back of the net on a play initiated by fifth-year veteran Lindsay Arbeau of Bath, N.B. and rearguard Lauren Meschino of Toronto.
Trailing 1-0 after one period and still without a shot on goal in the match, Dalhousie evened the mark 4:17 into the second when rookie forward Ellen Wright of Wolfville, N.S. slipped one past netminder Morgan Wielgosz. Jayne Knowles of Windsor, N.S., also a freshman, picked up an assist on the Tigers first-ever goal at nationals.
The tie proved short-lived as three minutes later Heslin potted her second of the night on a feed from sophomore defender Andrea Bevan of Collingwood, Ont. Fiona Aiston of Ottawa added another marker at 13:29 to give Laurier a 3-1 lead heading into the dressing room after 40 minutes of play.
Dalhousie sent its numerous fans into a frenzy midway through the third period when forward Jenna Currie of Berwick, N.S., another first-year forward, scored on the power play to bring the Tigers back to within one. Sarah Beckman of Ottawa and Leah Merkley of Bracebridge, Ont. assisted on the play.
Kenworthy rounded out the scoring with just over two minutes to go assisted by freshman Lauren Barch of Burlington, Ont.
Laurier out shot Dalhousie 15-0 in the opening 20 minutes, 17-6 in the second period, and 12-8 in the third. The Golden Hawks were shut out in five power-play opportunities, while the Tigers were 1-for-4.
No. 6 Dalhousie (0-1) will face QSSF champion McGill Friday at 4 p.m. AT.
