ALLGOOD NETS OUA MVP HONOURS
Fifth-year Phys Ed major Kim Devereaux (Seaforth, ON) of the Toronto Varsity Blues is the recipient of the Marion Hilliard Award, which honours the athlete who demonstrates outstanding achievement in athletics, academics and community leadership. Devereaux has been one of the league's most consistent defenders on the ice, utilizing her size and strength to limit the opposition in the Blues end. The Toronto veteran also has a feared shot from the point, which helped her chip in four goals in 20 games this season. When away from the rink, Devereaux has volunteered as a teacher's assistant at Lawrence Park Collegiate Institute, serving as a role model to help children understand the value of academics and athletics. She is the Blues intramural referee coordinator, a volunteer physical therapist football team and has been involved in the Phys Ed faculty's March break Hockey Program as an on-ice instructor and therapist, in addition to winning prestigious U of T awards like the Helen Gurney and Dave McMaster awards for her commitment to her sports, studies and community.
The Queen's Golden Gaels finished second in the OUA standings and first-year sensation Victoria Kaufmann (Whitby, ON) was a key component of the Gaels potent attack. Kaufmann was named the OUA Rookie of the Year after netting 11 goals and nine assists on the year, leading Queen's in both goals and points.
The defending CIS-champion Laurier Golden Hawks enjoyed an incredible follow-up to their dream 2005 season. Head coach Rick Osborne guided the team to a solid 20-3-1-0 record in 2006, earning the Hawks bench boss Coach of the Year honours. Laurier finished 11 points ahead of second-place Queen's and led the OUA in both goals scored (76) and fewest goals allowed (35). Osborne's team also showed tremendous resiliency after losing starting goaltender Morgan Wielgosz for a few games with a concussion, always bouncing back well from their rare defeats. He was the West Coach of the Year last season.
Two of Osborne's players join Allgood and Devereaux as first-team all-stars. Laurissa Kenworthy (Newmarket, ON) finished third in the league scoring race as she tallied 11 goals and 13 assists for 24 points. The third-year Kinesiology/Phys Ed major was one of the Hawks most clutch players, bagging a team-best three game-winning-goals. Kenworthy was a West all-star in 2005. Kenworthy's teammate Ashley Stephenson (Mississauga, ON) was also named to the first-team after a great year on the blueline. The fifth-year veteran didn't miss a game this season and played a crucial role for the league's stingiest defence. Stephenson also showed she could contribute offensively with three goals and seven assists. Varsity Blues' centre Emily Patry (Calgary, AB) rounds out the skaters on the first-team. Playing her third season with Toronto, Patry led the league in assists with 18 and finished second behind Allgood in points with 26. Three of her eight goals were game-winners for the 12-7-3-2 Blues. York Lions netminder Melanie Quinn (Newmarket, ON) was named goalie for the first team after a busy and productive season. The fourth-year veteran was third in the OUA with a 1.72 goals against average, while topping both the league and the CIS in save percentage, turning away 554 of the 583 shots she faced (.950). Quinn was an OUA athlete of the week earlier in the season and ended her season by making 52 saves in a 3-3 tie with the powerful Guelph Gryphons last week.
