SEKELA TAKES OVER LANCERS WOMEN'S HOCKEY PROGRAM
An experienced varsity player and coach, Sekela has been coaching for the past five years, including last season as an assistant with the Lancer women's hockey program.
Before coming to Windsor, Sekela served as the assistant coach at Burlington High School in Burlington, MA for their women's hockey program and also as the head coach for Hockey Advantage, a club program in Woburn, MA.
"We are very pleased to have Coach Sekela leading our women's hockey program forward next season," said Grace. "She has extensive experience as both a player and a coach, which we believe will be invaluable for the continued development of our women's hockey program."
Sekela enjoyed an impressive career while playing at NCAA Division 1 Dartmouth College. As the team captain, she led her team to the Ivy League championship in 1998 and 2001, the ECAC Championship in 2001 and to the NCAA Final Four in 2000 and 2001. She was named an Honorable Mention All-Ivy in her senior year in 2001.
Carrie also played professionally for two seasons with the Newtonbrook Panthers, now the Brampton Thunder of the National Women's Hockey League (NWHL). The Panthers squad featured an impressive group of players including Sekela along with Karen Nystrom, Laura Schuler, Angela James and Lori Dupuis, who all played on the Canadian National Team.
Sekela earned a B.A. in Art History from Dartmouth College and holds her Masters in Education from Harvard University.
"I am thrilled to get the opportunity to become the head coach of the Windsor Lancers women's hockey program," said Sekela. "Coach Lalonde has provided a solid foundation for this program and I look forward to continuing to work with him and our other assistants to help build our club into a top program in the OUA."
This past season Sekela had the opportunity to be mentored by former head coach Todd Lalonde, who had coached previously with the OHL's Sudbury Wolves and then professionally in the WPHL with the Waco Wizards.
Lalonde, who will stay on next season as the Director of Development for Lancer Hockey and serve as an associate coach with Sekela, believes she is ready to take over the reins as the head coach of a CIS women's hockey program.
"I am very excited that Carrie will get the chance to lead our women's hockey program forward next season," commented Lalonde. "She did a great job for us last season and has the hockey background and coaching experience necessary to lead the Lancers forward in the future."
In addition to having Coach Lalonde remain involved with the program and continuing his work with player recruitment and skill development, Sekela will add Cec Eaves as an assistant coach and advisor with the program.
Eaves has enjoyed a long association with the University of Windsor as he was a faculty member in the Faculty of Human Kinetics and served as the former head coach of the Lancers' men's hockey program. Currently, Coach Eaves works as an advisor Windsor Wilcats women's hockey program.
The Eaves family has impressive hockey bloodlines as Coach Eaves' son Mike is the head coach of the NCAA Champion University of Wisconsin Badgers men's hockey program.
"Cec will be a tremendous asset to our program," added Sekela. "He has a wealth of experience in collegiate hockey and will be an outstanding resource next season."
The Lancers women's hockey program will open their 2006/07 OUA season on October 14 in Toronto when they face the York University Lions.
