HAWKS AND GRYPHS TIE 1-1 IN BATTLE OF FIRST AND SECOND TEAMS
Third-year forward Laurissa Kenworthy scored a goal in the second period to help the top-ranked Laurier Golden Hawks earn a 1-1 ties with the Guelph Gryphons Thursday in Guelph. The Hawks were coming off a weekend in which they had they were beaten for the first time this season to the York Lions. Becky Simpson opened the scoring for Guelph, who sit a distant second behind the Hawks in the OUA with a 6-3-5-0 record. Both standout goalies were solid in net as the Gryphons’ Aleisha Lusk made 28 saves and Laurier’s Morgan Wielgosz stopped 25 of 26 shots that came her way. The Hawks did get back on the winning track Sunday as they defeated rival Waterloo 2-1. Diana Cicchillio and Lauren Meschino scored for Laurier, while Sarah Bryson had the lone goal for the Warriors. Wielgosz made another 25 saves for her league-leading ninth win on the year.
The York Lions overcame a two-goal deficit to tie the Brock Badgers 3-3 Friday. Kaylee Black and Amanda Cole had a goal and an assist each for the Lions, while Brock’s all-time leading scorer Kate Allgood added to her school records with a goal and an assist.
Alson Goodman scored twice and Amanda Cretto made 41 saves as the Windsor Lancers defeated the Queen’s Golden Gaels 3-2 Saturday Windsor had a much tougher time the following day as they dropped an 8-2 decision to the Toronto Varsity Blues at Varsity Arena. Etobicoke, ON native Katie Dowdall had a career night with a hat-trick and two assists to lead the Blues attack. Emily Patry added a goal and four assists, while Annie Delguidice scored a pair for Toronto. The Blues lost 3-1 to the Western Mustangs Saturday.
