OUA W-VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP: MUSTANGS WIN OUA WEST SHOWDOWN
The Mustangs defeated the Lancers by scores of 25-11, 25-21 and 25-21.
In set one, Western overpowered the Lancers offensively with impressive hitting and well anticipated blocks. While the Lancers fought hard, the Mustangs managed to take the first set 25-11.
Speed and timing played a crucial role in the second set. The Lancers fought hard to contain the Mustangs' quick, fluid plays, with Michelle Pierce (Windsor, Ont.), Jillian Fantuz (Chatham, Ont.) and Kaila Seguin (Windsor, Ont.) helping to pressure the powerful Mustang squad.
Down by eight, the Lancers battled back to tighten the gap before eventually falling 25-21.
Windsor picked it up in set three and took their first lead of the game. Some Mustang breakdowns allowed the Lancers to capitalize on their opportunities to pull ahead.
However, Windsor's third set lead was narrowed by a Western comeback midway through the set. Back-and-forth scoring continued for the remainder of the set, with the Mustangs eventually taking over near the end of the set for the 25-21 win and the match victory.
For the Lancers, Seguin led the way with 11 kills, and was named Windsor's player of the game. Jacqueline Robinson (Vancouver) took the honours for Western.
TORONTO 3, RMC 0
At RMC, the Toronto Varsity Blues defeated the Paladins 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-13) on Saturday.
The Paladins were unable to block Heather Bansley's (Waterdown, Ont.) impressive kills as she led the Blues to victory. Bansley skilfully landed 12 kills, nine digs and five serving aces making her the high-scorer of the game. Fifth-year veteran Kristina Valjas (Toronto) was impressive as well, tallying eight kills in the win.
Middle blocker Melissa McCoy (Kingston, Ont.) pulled through for the Paladins with seven kills and three digs, while Norah Collins (Cedar Valley, Ont.) had six kills in the loss.
QUEEN'S 3, RYERSON 1
At Queen's, Colleen Ogilvie (Calgary), had 14 kills and two blocks as the Gaels defeated the Ryerson Rams 3-1 in Bartlett Gymnasium Saturday evening.
Ogilvie has now recorded 28 kills over two games this weekend against Toronto and Ryerson.
The Gaels came out strong in the first set leaving the Rams behind early, easily winning the set 25-14.
The Rams caught on by the second set, however, and with some strong hits from Rams Lindsay Franco (Oakville, Ont.), the Rams narrowly beat the Gaels 25-23.
The Gaels had a balanced attack in the final two sets to win them both 25-18 and 25-15 respectively.
Lorna Button (Newcastle, Ont.), led the teams in digs with 14, as well as having nine kills. Katie Matthews (Aurora, Ont.) also had a great game in all aspects with eight kills, four blocks and five digs. The hitting success of the Gaels can be contributed to the strong setting of Gaels' setter Kristin Collins (Whitby, Ont.), who had 30 assists in the three sets she played.
MCMASTER 3, LAURIER 2
At Wilfrid Laurier, the Golden Hawks took the McMaster Marauders to five sets, but fell short for a 3-2 loss.
In the first set the Hawks took an early 4-0 lead at the first technical timeout at 8-6. The Marauders then went on a 8-1 run and moved ahead 16-2 at the second technical Laurier fought back late in the set, but after closing the score to 24-23 McMaster called a timeout to refocus and took the first set 25-23.
The second set was all Marauders as they built a 16-5 lead before the Hawks responded with a short four point run of their own. From 17-10 on the Hawks only scored one more point as the visitors would dominate the set 25-11.
Looking to avenge the previous set, Laurier came out strong in the third outscoring their opponents 12-4 to open. Both teams would exchange points to the 23 point mark, but two kills by Laurier's Kaitlin Sauder (St. Jacobs, Ont.) sealed the match for the purple and gold by a score of 25-23.
The fourth set started out with each team going on short runs, but by the first technical timeout the Marauders were ahead 8-7. McMaster continued to press the Hawks and went on an 8-0 run to get to the second technical timeout. The visitors drew even at 24, but a kill and service ace by Julie Gordon (Barrie, Ont.) would ice the 26-24 win for the home team.
With the Marauders leading 11-4, the purple and gold went on a five point run to close the gap. The visitors scored the final four points to take the set 15-9 and the match 3-2.
Larissa Puhach (Burlington, Ont.) was McMaster's top scorer with 21 points. She had a game high 19 kills. Jennifer Holt (Hamilton, Ont.) led all players with 31 assists.
Laurier was led by Sauder who had 14.5 points on the night with 13 kills, a service ace and a blocking assist. Lauren Carter (Ottawa) and Brittany Brunt (Ashburn, Ont.) split the setting duties with 19 and 15 assists respectively.
BROCK 3, LAKEHEAD 0
At Lakehead, the Brock Badgers won for the third time in their last four matches as they swept the Lakehead Thunderwolves by the score of 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-22) on the road Saturday.
Lakehead's Vanessa Chorkaway (Lively, Ont.) led the Thunderwolves with 25 points off 22 kills and five digs.
Leading the Badgers offence was Erin Mercer (Rockwood, Ont.) who recorded 10 kills and 15 digs for the double-double. Shannon Anderson (Newmarket, Ont.) contributed with six kills and six digs while Katelyn Giebrecht (Virgil, Ont.) added five kills in the victory.
WATERLOO 3, GUELPH 1
At Waterloo, the Guelph Gryphons fell to 3-3 on the season after a 3-1 defeat to Waterloo on the road. Set scores were 20-25, 22-25, 25-17, 22-25.
Waterloo's Bojana Josipovic (Kitchener, Ont.) led the Warriors scoring with 13 kills and 11 digs for 15 points. Teammate Kate Flanagan (Burlington, Ont.) had 12 points in the match (12 kills, 26 digs).
The Gryphons scoring was led tonight by Brooke Lloyd (Whitby, Ont.) and Kylen Van Osch (Exeter, Ont.) with 13 kills, three blocks each for 16 points apiece, followed by Kaitlyn Krizmanich (Carlisle, Ont.) with 13 (11 kills, one ace, one block). Naomi Fukudome (Kitchener, Ont.) led the defence with 18 digs.
RYERSON 3, RMC 1
At RMC, the Ryerson Rams defeated the Paladins 3-1.
The Rams dropped the opening set 25-22, before responding with three straight wins to take the match (25-22, 26-24, and 25-20).
RMC's Melissa McCoy (Kingston, Ont.) led all scorers with 17 points (13 kills and four digs) while teammate Norah Collins (Cedar Valley, Ont.) had nine kills and 14 digs for 15 points.
Kasandra Bracken (Sherwood Park, Alta.) led the Rams with nine kills, four blocks, three digs and an ace, while Jana Champagne (Edmonton) had seven kills and five digs for Ryerson, who played both weekend matches without a setter in the line-up.
QUEEN'S 3, TORONTO 2
At Queen's, Colleen Ogilvie (Calgary), and Natalie Gray (Oshawa, Ont.), had 14 and 13 kills respectively to help the Gaels beat the Toronto Varsity Blues in five sets in Kingston Friday evening.
The first set saw the Gaels come out strong with Gray putting together string of hard kills. This helped the Gaels finish the set 25-19 to take the early lead. The second set saw the Gaels struggling, making small errors which compounded on themselves. To add to the difficulties Toronto's Heather Bansley (Waterdown, Ont.) had a strong set, putting her hits around the Gaels' blocks. The Gaels lost the set 25-12.
Queen's had a much stronger third set with an offensive push. Katie Matthews (Aurora, Ont.), had several key kills. Lorna Button (Newcastle, Ont.), who had remained hidden for the first two sets, came out explosively with a string of powerful kills. The Gaels took the third set 25-19. The Gaels struggled, however, to put two wins together and despite strong hitting from Ogilvie, the Gaels lost the fourth set 25-19.
Going into the fifth set tied the Gaels fell behind early as Toronto took a 5-1 lead. The Gaels fought back, however, with contributions from Gray and Ogilvie to regain the lead and win the set 15-11.
GUELPH 3, LAURIER 0
At Wilfrid Laurier, the Guelph Gryphons picked up a key road victory with a 3-0 win over Laurier. Set scores were 25-22, 25-19, 25-20 .
The Gryphons were very strong tactically throughout, taking advantage of some of Laurier's weaknesses and blocking very well defensively.
The first set was a close affair throughout with neither team able to build up a big lead until Guelph broke a 20-20 tie and pushed through to take the set 25-22.
The second set was close as well, with only one point separating the teams at the second technical timeout, but a five-point Guelph run at 19-17 broke open the set and allowed the Gryphons to win 25-19.
The third set was full of momentum shifts as Guelph dashed out to an 8-1 lead only to allow Laurier a six-point run to get back in the set. After the second technical timeout, Guelph scored a number of blocking points and opened up a five-point lead at 21-16. From there, the Gryphons were able to play a sideout game to win the set and the match at 25-20.
Guelph's scoring was led tonight by Kylen Van Osch (Exeter, Ont.) with 16 points (12 kills, four blocks) and Kaitlyn Krizmanich (Carlisle, Ont.) with 12 kills.
LAKEHEAD 3, WINDSOR 1
At Lakehead, after a shaky first set loss, the Thunderwolves recovered in a big way, winning the following three sets to grab a convincing 3-1 win over the Windsor Lancers, Friday night at the C. J. Sanders Fieldhouse in Thunder Bay, Ont.. Scores in the sets were 18-25, 25-23, 25-12 and 25-20.
Vanessa Chorkaway (Lively, Ont.) had a huge game for Lakehead, earning player of the game honours after registering 20 points with 10 kills and five blocks. Freshman Maddison Kluke (Dryden, Ont.) looked good with 15 points from the left side, adding 11 digs on defence. Both players had five service aces apiece as the Wolves controlled the pace well, collecting 12 service aces as a team.
Setter Jill Bodak (Thunder Bay, Ont.) played well in three games with 22 assists while libero Ashley Baer had 18 digs to lead a sound defensive effort.
Kaila Seguin (Windsor, Ont.) paced the Lancers with 20 points while Jillian Fantuz (Chatham, Ont.) had 34 assists on the night.
MCMASTER 3, WATERLOO 1
At Waterloo, Kaila Janssen (Oshawa, Ont.) led the way once again for the McMaster Marauders with a 13 point, 12-kill effort as the Marauders escaped with a 3-1 (25-20, 16-25, 25-18, 27-25) victory over the Warriors.
Larissa Puhach (Burlington, Ont.) and Sarah Kiernan (Hamilton, Ont.) both posted double digits for the Marauders with 11 points each. Puhach tallied 11 kills in the match while Kiernan had eight and an ace.
Jennifer Holt (Hamilton, Ont.) led all players with 34 assists and Megan Nederveen (Dundas, Ont.) had 13 digs.
The Warriors were led by Bojana Josipovic (Kitchener, Ont.) who accounted for 18 of the team's 51 points.
