BANSLEY NOMINATED FOR CIS PLAYER OF THE YEAR
HAMILTON, Ont. - Three student-athletes and one head coach from Ontario University Athletics (OUA) are nominated for national awards at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) women's volleyball championship hosted by the University of Alberta in Edmonton.
Toronto Varsity Blues left side Heather Bansley (Waterdown, Ont.) has been nominated for the CIS player of the year award. The fifth-year player is a four-time OUA all-star. She led OUA with an average of 5.17 points and 4.26 kills per set. Bansley earned 239 points, 196 kills, 164 digs, 32 service aces, 11 blocks and five assists for a Varsity Blues team that finished on top of the OUA East with a record of 14-5. The Varsity Blues won the OUA championship last weekend, and will play for the CIS title this weekend.
Teammate Michelle Wood (Toronto) is nominated for the CIS libero of the year. The fifth-year player was tied for fourth among OUA players in digs per game in 2009-10, averaging 4.06. The Varsity Blues lost a league-low 19 sets, with Wood's defensive prowess being a major factor.
Julie Gordon (Barrie, Ont.) of the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks is nominated for the CIS rookie of the year. The first-year middle led her team with 227.5 points, 157 kills, 45 blocks and 34 service aces. She also contributed 70 digs. Gordon's 34 service aces were good for second in all of OUA. Gordon is also an OUA second-team all-star as well as a member of the OUA all-rookie team.
Tim Louks of the McMaster Marauders is nominated for CIS coach of the year. Louks led the Marauders to an OUA-best 16-3 record, and home court advantage throughout the OUA playoffs. They have finished first in the OUA West three straight seasons. The Marauders were the only OUA team to be ranked in the CIS Top 10 this season.
CIS women's volleyball award winners will be announced at the all-Canadian banquet on Thursday in Edmonton.
