MARAUDERS TO HOST OUA FINAL FOUR WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
Sarah Kiernan (Hamilton, Ont.) opened the match with an ace, but the first set proved to be fairly even in the early going. Tied at 12-12, the Marauders built a small lead 16-13 at the second technical timeout. Margot Randall (Oakville, Ont.) then served the Marauders to a 20-13 advantage and they would close out the set 25-17.
The Marauders moved out ahead in set two with a 5-1 lead and they where up 8-2 by the first technical timeout. Out of the time out Waterloo started to respond. The Warriors cut the McMaster lead to 9-8, and after tying things at 12 they took a 13-12 advantage. The Warriors continued to lead, 16-15, by the second technical time out. McMaster rallied late in the set, but Waterloo held on 25-20 to even up the match.
The Marauders stormed back in set three taking a 16-7 lead in the second technical timeout. Some good on the fly adjustments from fifth year senior setter, and player of the match, Jenn Holt (Hamilton, Ont.) extinguished a Waterloo rally to put the Marauders ahead convincingly 21-10. As was the case most of the match Waterloo regrouped and cut into the McMaster lead getting as close as 24-19 before a Kailee Stock (Newmarket, Ont.) kill gave the Marauders the set.
MAC kept right on going in the fourth opening up a 5-0 lead that expanded to 8-2 at the first technical timeout. The teams traded points until back-to-back aces from Kaila Janssen (Oshawa, Ont.) improved the McMaster lead to 13-5. Another Janssen ace increased the MAC lead to 16-5. The Marauders pulled away from there. A big block by Holt gave the Marauders a 13-point lead, 20-7. An ace by Holt made it 22-9 and she served out the set to secure the match and date in the OUA semifinals.
Holt finished with 38 assists and 4 aces along with 11 digs. Janssen led the scoring with 15 points on nine kills and six aces. Shannon McRobert (14 points, 11 kills) and Larissa Puhach (13 points, eight kills) also scored in double figures.
Kate Flanagan (Burlington, Ont.) was named the Warriors player of the match with 10 points on eight kills. Bojana Josipovic (Kitchener, Ont.) was the top scorer for the Warriors with 12 points on 10 kills.
McMaster will now host the OUA women's Final Four on Friday, Feb. 26 and Saturday, Feb 27.
