GEE-GEES COMPLETE TWO-GAME SWEEP OF THUNDERWOLVES IN WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
The Gee-Gees started out strong in the first set with some good kills against Lakehead. The Thunderwolves made numerous mistakes on easy plays and gave the Gee-Gees several points on missed serves and poor hits. At one point in the first set, the Gee-Gees were ahead 8-1.
In the second set, the Gee-Gees slowed their pace, and Lakehead made them work harder to score points. Middle Joanie Beauregard-Veillette (Rouyn-Noranda, Que.) had some great kills and thought that her team fought hard against Lakehead. "[We were at] a good point where Lakehead had the momentum than we took it back," said Beauregard-Veillette.
Captain and setter Tess Edwards (Ottawa) thought that her team played a solid match as well. Although Edwards said she was pleased with the Gee-Gees results, she noted that there are still things that they need to work on for 2010. Edwards, who also celebrated her 22nd birthday, was honoured with player of the game.
Head coach Lionel Woods said that his team is, "Going in the right direction in terms of how we want to play."
"We told ourselves that we have to take that risk to play the way we want to play," continued Woods, referencing their results from the season to date, "We are starting to turn the corner on how to play as a team."
The Gee-Gees start the New Year at Brock on January 8 at 7:30 p.m.
