OUA WOMAN OF INFLUENCE: ANGELA FRAWLEY
The event honours female student-athletes who have excelled in their chosen sports and fields of study. This year's guest speaker will be former prima ballerina and arts advocate Karen Kain.
Acknowledged as one of the leading classical ballerinas of her time, Kain is also one of Canada's foremost arts advocates, bringing the same passion and dedication she exemplified as a dancer to her roles as a spokesperson for Canadian culture and as the artistic director of The National Ballet of Canada.
Tickets to the luncheon are $88.20 each (taxes included) and can be purchased by calling Stephanie White at 416-923-1688 ext. 21 or via e-mail at info@womenofinfluenceinc.ca.

Name: Angela Frawley
School: York University
Sport: Volleyball
Academic Program: English
Hometown: Sudbury, Ont.
Angela Frawley completed her fifth year in OUA with the York Lions women's volleyball team in 2008-09 and helped lead the team to the OUA championship, the program's first title in 12 years. She was named an OUA all-star for the first time and received the R.W. Pugh Fair Play Award at the CIS championships. She was also named to the CIS academic all-Canadian honour roll last year.
The Sudbury, Ont. native spent the first four seasons of her career at Guelph, winning OUA silver and bronze medals with the Gryphons. After a three-year hiatus from interuniversity sport, Frawley enrolled at York for a second degree in English and spent a year coaching the women's volleyball team until she was eligible to play her final season.
Known affectionately as "mom" by the rest of the squad, Frawley was a leader on and off the court for her younger teammates. Now finished with her playing days, Frawley continues to coach the Lions while studying to become a teacher in York's Bachelor of Education program.
Q: What is your proudest academic achievement?
A: My proudest academic achievement is being named a CIS academic all-Canadian.
Q: What is your proudest athletic achievement?
A: Hoisting the OUA championship banner after the gold medal win with York.
Q: What is your most memorable community-related moment?
A: I cannot choose one moment, however, I will speak to the experience of coaching. Over the past five years, I have been privileged to participate as a coach to athletes of all ages. It has been my pleasure to give back to the sport community which has made me the person I am today.
Q: What are your future plans?
A: I look forward to finding employment as a teacher, and to pursuing a master's degree in education. I believe my passion for sport lends itself well to the classroom, where both student and athlete thrive off of the scaffolding of knowledge, ultimately gaining independence and individual success. I am currently an assistant coach with York University's women's volleyball team and look forward to continuing my indoor coaching aspirations. I am also working on my NCCP Level 2 beach volleyball certification, and endeavour to develop the sport of beach volleyball both on and off the sand.
Q: What woman has most influenced you?
A: My mother, Cindy Frawley, has without question been the most influential woman in my life. Working hard to make a name for herself in the business industry, she has become a success story and role model to many young women. Not only is she a successful businesswoman, but she is also an amazing mother. She has been a strong tour-de-force in supporting my brother and I with our aspirations, and along with my father, has been the greatest fan of our lives. I have always admired the determination and positivity with which she lives her life. My mother taught me to stand up for myself, to speak up for what I believe in, and to trust in my abilities. I am extremely proud to be my mother's daughter.
Q: If you could sit down to dinner with any woman, who would it be?
A: Malalai Joya, because she is heroism incarnate. Known as one of the bravest women in Afghanistan, Joya has survived four assassination attempts yet continues to fight an uphill battle against the oppression of women in Afghanistan.
