OUA W-VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP: MARAUDERS, VARSITY BLUES MAINTAIN TOP SPOTS
Key players for the Blues included Rebecca Crosier (Ottawa) with seven kills and six digs, and Karlee Diesing (Coquitlam, B.C.) with 13 kills and seven digs.
Leading the way for Lakehead were Thunder Bay, Ont. natives Karla Brayshaw and Sarah Reid with 12 kills and five kills respectively.
QUEEN'S 3, OTTAWA 1
At Queen's, despite losing the opening set, the Gaels (9-5) emerged victorious with a 3-1 (24-26, 25-12, 25-15, 25-12) victory over the Ottawa Gee-Gees (5-9) on Friday night.
The Gee-Gees narrowly took the first set by a score of 26-24, but the Tricolour stormed back, winning the remaining sets 25-12, 25-15, and 25-12.
The Gaels were lead by Julie Lockwood (Calgary) with a game-high 36 assists.
GUELPH 3, LAURIER 2
At Guelph, the Gryphons (10-4) recovered from a 2-1 deficit to beat the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks 3-2 (27-25, 26-28, 17-25, 25-19, 15-8).
Guelph's Kylen Van Osch (Exeter, Ont.) had a standout performance with 16 kills, five blocks, and one ace. Melissa McGinn (Vancouver) was also spectacular, amassing 49 assists on the night.
The Golden Hawks dropped to 4-10.
GUELPH 3, WATERLOO 0
At Guelph, the Gryphons (10-4) continued their home court dominance with a 3-0 (25-23, 26-24, 25-21) victory over the Waterloo Warriors (11-3).
Waterloo native Claire Sandor lead all Gryphons with 16 points, including 14 kills, one block, and one ace.
Rookie Erinn Bickle (Whitby, Ont.) was also a key contributor, adding six kills, four blocks, and one ace.
WESTERN 3, RYERSON 0
At Western, the Mustangs (10-4) made good use of their home court advantage, defeating the Ryerson Rams 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-18) at Alumni Hall.
London's Claire Morrow was named player of the game for her strong defensive performance, which included 14 digs.
Western's Jacqueline Robinson (Vancouver) gave the Rams (6-8) problems all night, scoring 11 points and nine kills.
YORK 3, WINDSOR 1
At Windsor, Thinesa Sriskandarajah (Scarborough, Ont.) lead the York Lions (8-5) to a 3-1 (25-21, 19-25, 25-19, 25-13) win over the Windsor Lancers (1-13).
Sriskandarajah (Scarborough, Ont.) finished the match with 18 points, including 17 kills and 15 digs.
She was helped by teammates Kristina Vlcek (Toronto) with 13 points, and Gina Morphy (Ottawa) with 30 assists and three service aces.
TORONTO 3, LAKEHEAD 0
At Toronto, for the second time in two days, the Toronto Varsity Blues (10-4) handily beat the visiting Lakehead Thunderwolves (1-14) in three sets (25-15, 25-18, 25-16).
While multiple Toronto players put up impressive numbers, senior Kathleen Mahannah (North Vancouver, B.C.) was named player of the game for her dominant performance, scoring one kill, six digs, and 41 assists.
Thunderwolves setter Jenna McDonald (Winnipeg) had an outstanding performance with five digs and 21 assists.
OTTAWA 3, RMC 1
At RMC, the Ottawa Gee-Gees (5-9) picked up their first win of 2010 with a 3-1 (25-27, 25-16, 25-9, 25-20) victory over the Paladins (0-12).
The Garnet and Grey's Stephanie McGuinty (Ottawa) earned 14 points and 11 digs, while teammate Karina Krueger-Schwanke (Blumenau, Brazil) contributed 18 points and 13 digs.
QUEEN'S 3, BROCK 2
At Queen's, were it not for the play of Gaels middle Katie Matthews (Aurora, Ont.), the Brock Badgers (10-6) would have completed a perfect comeback. Queen's won 3-2 (25-23, 25-18, 22-25, 13-25, 15-13).
Matthews was instrumental in helping the Gaels to a fifth set victory, after her squad won the opening two and lost the third and fourth.
Matthews concluded the night with 19 points, including four blocks and three service aces. The Tricolour's Natalie Gray (Oshawa, Ont.) added 16 kills and 21 digs.
MCMASTER 3, LAKEHEAD 0
At McMaster, the Marauders (13-1) proved why they sit atop the OUA West division with a decisive 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-21) win over the visiting Lakehead Thunderwolves (1-14).
The Marauders were propelled to victory thanks to excellent performances from Genevieve Dumas (North Bay, Ont.) with eight kills, Meghan Jamieson (Chatham, Ont.) with seven kills and two aces, and Laura Cobb (Chatham, Ont.) with 24 assists.
Lakehead's Karla Brayshaw (Thunder Bay, Ont.) demonstrated superb skill, scoring seven kills, two aces, and eight digs.
WESTERN 3, YORK 0
At Western, the Mustangs (10-4) survived a late offensive surge by the York Lions to come away with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-23) victory.
Despite being down two games, the Lions rallied late in the third to tie the match at 22, but it was too little, too late as the Mustangs held on for the win.
Western's Elaine Screaton (Calgary) lead the Mustang attack with 11 kills, 11 digs, and two aces. Teammate Jenna Thomson (St. Marys, Ont.) also caused chaos for the Lions, scoring 34 assists and 12 digs.
RYERSON 3, WINDSOR 1
At Windsor, the Ryerson Rams (6-8) took full points from their road trip, beating the Lancers (1-13) by a 3-1 (26-24, 25-22, 17-25, 25-22) count.
Leah Saar (Ajax, Ont.), Lindsay Franco (Oakville, Ont.) and Jennifer Williams (Stoney Creek, Ont.) earned 12, 11 and 10 kills for the Rams, respectively.
BROCK 3, RMC 0
At RMC, the Brock Badgers (10-6) had no trouble dealing with the RMC Paladins (0-12), sweeping their opponents in three sets (25-22, 25-21, 27-25).
Outstanding play took place on both sides of the net from a multitude of players. Brock's Erin Mercer (Rockwood, Ont.), Tori Stirling (Whitby, Ont.), Rachel Roorda (St. George, Ont.), Katelyn Geisbrecht (Virgil, Ont.) and Shannon Anderson (Newmarket, Ont.) each recorded six or more kills.
Top players for the Paladins were Melissa McCoy (Kingston, Ont.) with 17 kills and Norah Collins (Cedar Valley, Ont.) with 15 kills and 13 digs.
