VARSITY BLUES BLANK GOLDEN HAWKS IN WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
The game, which was originally scheduled for Nov. 8, was postponed in accordance with the OUA's H1N1 policy. The Blues improve to 13-5 and remain in the top spot in the East, while the Golden Hawks drop to 5-13 and sit in sixth in the West.
Blues setter Kathleen Mahannah recorded an ace on the opening serve to establish the tone for the first set. The Blues led 16-8 at the second technical time out and the dynamic duo of Diesing (Coquitlam, B.C.) and Valjas (Toronto) would secure the win 25-15.
The second set started much like the first as rookie leftside hitter Rebecca Crosier (Ottawa) played a large role in gaining Toronto's16-8 lead at the second technical time out. However, the Golden Hawks began to rally and brought the game to within three at 23-20.
The Blues showed why they are the top team in the East as Mahannah and middle Katrina Rossall of Calgary put up a huge block at the net to allow Diesing to wrap things up with a huge kill. Toronto took the second set 25-23.
Laurier built off their second-set momentum and led throughout the first half of the third set. Down 8-6 at the first technical time out, Blues veteran Lauren Willougby (Unionville, Ont.) rallied the troops with a pair of kills and Valjas followed suit as Toronto took a slight one-point lead (16-15).
The rest of the game went back and forth however it was Crosier who saved the day with two huge kills to get U of T to within one and Valjas ended the game in style for a 25-22 win.
Diesing added 13 digs to her 14-kill performance and was named the Varsity Blues player of the match. Valjas had 14 kills and nine digs, while Crosier recorded seven kills and 13 digs. Mahannah ended the night with 42 assists and 13 digs, while libero Michelle Wood (Toronto) tallied 22 digs in the win.
Laurier was led by Victoria Altomare's (Toronto) six kills, while Julie Gordon of Barrie, Ont. had five kills and three serving aces. Libero Victoria Cowley (Etobicoke, Ont.) recorded 19 digs in the loss. The Golden Hawks dropped to 5-13.
The Varsity Blues return to the court on Saturday when they travel to our nation's capital to take on the Ottawa Gee-Gees. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
