OUA W-VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP: LIONS BEGIN TO PROWL
Against the Lions, Laurier won the first set 25-22, only to put in a dismal effort in the second set to lose 25-12. York again took the game to the Hawks and beat them 25-15, before the purple and gold bounced back to take the fourth set 25-20. Unfortunately the visitors couldn't contain the Lions hitting game and fell in the final frame 15-12.
Tesca Andrew-Wasylik (Unionville, Ont.) led the Hawks with a 16-point effort with 16 kills, two service aces and two blocks. Julie Gordon (Barrie, Ont.) was second on the team in scoring 14 while Amara Llias (Toronto) and Megan Gilmore (Cambridge, Ont.) both chipped in 11.
The Lions were led by Thinesa Sriskandarajah (Scarborough, Ont.) who led all players with 20 points from 18 kills and four blocking assists. Gina Morphy (Ottawa) also had a game high 32 assists.
WATERLOO 3, WINDSOR 1
At Windsor, the host Lancers were upended by the Waterloo warriors 3-1.
The Lancers started strong in set one getting on the board early. Waterloo retaliated with a series of high-powered offensive plays and strong defensive instincts. Waterloo won the first set 25-10.
Windsor picked up the intensity in set two. Their strong hitting and well anticipated blocks gave Windsor their first lead of the match. Both teams fought through intense rallies late in the game to try and solidify the win. Windsor took it 25-22.
A fast start by the Warriors saw Windsor down early in set three. Late in the game a round of serving by Michelle Pierce (Windsor, Ont.) gave the Lancers a chance to take the game, but it wasn't enough to hold off the Waterloo offence as they won the set 25-21.
Waterloo started the set determined to take the win. The Lancers didn't give up easily, as they shone on defence once again digging hard and rushing to the net for well placed blocking. Final score of the fourth set was 25-12 Waterloo.
For Windsor, Kaila Seguin (Windsor, Ont.) had 12 kills and seven digs, while Mackenzie Coyle (Belle River, Ont.) had seven kills and Jillian Fantuz (Chatham, Ont.) and Jovana Stranatic (Windsor, Ont.) had seven digs each.
RYERSON 3, LAURIER 0
At Ryerson, the Rams played a strong match with three straight victorious sets (25-20, 25-22, 25-23) over the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday at Kerr Hall.
In the first set, Haley Wolfenden (Ottawa) took charge behind the line. With the score 5-4, she strategically served her way through the first technical 8-4, and then forced a Laurier timeout at 11-4 with a six point serving run. Tesca Andrew-Wasylik (Unionville, Ont.) put Laurier back in the game with a five point serving streak. Carli Yim (Markham, Ont.) brought the Rams within reach of the win and accepted the victory as Laurier's Alexandra Mingay (Toronto) spiked the ball out the back of the court to drop the game 25-20.
The second set had a consistently knotted score as the teams battled point-for-point. Ryerson's Clare Gamble (Toronto) took control behind the line, pressuring the Golden Hawks with a 22-20 score. Lindsay Franco (Oakville, Ont.) earned the set for Ryerson, serving through a Laurier timeout at 24-22 for the win, 25-22.
The third and final set started out strong in Ryerson's favour. Jennifer Williams (Stoney Creek, Ont.) served from a 6-3 lead through the first technical and a 9-4 lead. Again Williams proved her ability behind the line, serving the Rams into the lead, 19-18 from a 17-16 deficit. A Laurier swinging error concluded the set in Ryerson's favour 25-23.
YORK 3, BROCK 2
At Brock, the York Lions fought hard in a back-and-forth game against the Brock Badgers in St. Catharines on Saturday and emerged with a big 3-2 victory.
Brock came out firing in the first set but York kept it close until the end. Despite their efforts, the Badgers took the first set 25-20.
Then, in the second set, the Lions really came to life. York's game point and kill leader, Thinesa Sriskandarajah (Scarborough, Ont.), contributed this set, just a part of her 25-point and 23-kill game. Following close behind was Kristina Vlcek (Toronto) who had 24 points herself. Thanks to their efforts and the rest of the team, York took the second set 25-22.
The third set would be the longest, and the most gruelling for both teams as neither squad would let the other get ahead. York team captain Sarah Sutton (Scarborough, Ont.) put points towards her 20 point net, with an amazing 17 kills on the night. Brock finally managed to get the two point gap they needed and took the third set 27-25.
With the game on the line, York really stepped up. Gina Morphy (Ottawa) continued on her phenomenal night of 58 assists and with her help York took the fourth set 25-23.
MCMASTER 3, OTTAWA 2
At Ottawa, Genevieve Dumas (North Bay, Ont.) and Sarah Kiernan (Hamilton, Ont.) both recorded three aces and 13 points to lead the McMaster Marauders over the Gee-Gees 3-2 on Saturday night.
The Marauders picked up the first set, outscoring Ottawa by six (25-19). Ottawa flipped the scoreboard in the second stanza to tie things up before they took their first lead with a 25-20 win in the third. The Marauders came back with a vengeance, dominating the fourth set by 15 points (25-10). The final set also leaned in McMaster's favour with the final score reading 15-5.
Kaila Janssen (Oshawa, Ont.) also scored 13 points in the win with ten kills and 17 digs. Jennifer Holt (Hamilton, Ont.) led the match with 39 assists and three solo blocks.
Karina Krueger-Schwanke (Blumenau, Brazil) led the Gee-Gees with 14 points on 14 kills.
GUELPH 3, WESTERN 0
At Guelph, the Gryphons pulled off a huge home victory against the West Division leading Western Mustangs on Saturday night. Set scores were 26-24, 25-20 and 25-22.
The first set was a close affair with neither team gaining an advantage of more than two points until a Guelph run allowed them to go ahead 20-16. The Gryphons looked to be in control late leading 23-17 before some nervous points allowed Western to tie the score at 24. Guelph toughed it out though and eventually won the set at 26-24.
Western jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the second set but the Gryphons fought back to pull to within a point at the first technical timeout. Guelph was down 16-13 later in the set but a six-point run gave them the lead at 19-16. The Gryphons never relinquished the lead after that pulling away to win 25-20.
The third set was another close battle throughout but a four-point run gained Guelph the advantage at 19-15. From there, the teams traded sideouts until Western closed the gap to two points late at 22-20. Unlike the first set, the Gryphons did not waver and slugged their way to a 25-22 victory to end the match.
Kylen Van Osch continued her scorching scoring pace again leading the team with 20 points (15 kills, three blocks, two aces) followed by Claire Sandor with 16 (10 kills, one block, five aces).
WESTERN 3, WATERLOO 1
At Western, strong defence guided the Mustangs to a 3-1 (25-19, 25-23, 23-25, 25-17) win over the Waterloo Warriors at Alumni Hall on Friday night.
Claire Morrow (London, Ont.) led the defence with 24 digs, while Jenna Thomson (St. Marys, Ont.) had 46 assists.
Sarah Johnston (Stratford, Ont.) had two solo blocks, two assisted blocks, one ace and 12 kills, while Caleigh Whitaker (Sharon, Ont.) had a game-high 15 kills and 20 digs in a solid, two-way game.
Bojana Josipovic (Kitchener, Ont.) led the Warriors to a one-set win and finished the match with 14 points (10 kills, nine digs).
BROCK 3, TORONTO 2
At Brock, the Badgers won for the fourth time in their last five matches as they outlasted the Toronto Varsity Blues by the score of 3-2 (25-21, 25-22, 21-25, 21-25, 15-7) Friday night at the Bob Davis Gymnasium.
Brock led 2-0 before Toronto's Heather Bansley (Waterdown, Ont.) heated up offensively as Toronto came back to tie the match two games each. In the fifth and deciding game, Brock took a commanding 7-1 lead and never looked back on route to their fifth victory of the season.
The Badgers had a balanced offence led by Erin Mercer (Rockwood, Ont.) who recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs. Rachel Roorda (St. George, Ont.) contributed with 11 kills and five block solos; Katelyn Giesbrecht (Virgil, Ont.) added nine kills while Shannon Anderson (Newmarket, Ont.) and Tori Stirling (Whitby, Ont.) chipped in with eight kills each in the victory. Ally Fast (St. Catharines, Ont.) also recorded the double-double finishing with 44 assists and 14 digs in the victory.
For the Varsity Blues, Bansley led all scorers with a match high 33 kills, 24 digs and five service aces. For the match she hit an impressive .569 going 33-for-51 with just four errors.
GUELPH 3, WINDSOR 0
At Guelph, the Gryphons remained undefeated at home following their three set win against the Windsor Lancers on Friday night. Set scores were 25-20, 25-21, 25-13.
The first set was close to start with the scored tied at 11 before a Gryphons run opened up a 16-11 lead. Windsor battled back to close the gap to one point at 19-18 but Guelph rallied to stretch the lead again and finish the set at 25-20.
The second set also was close through the first two sections with Guelph holding a slim 16-14 advantage at the timeout. The teams continued to battled late as the score was tied at 20 before Guelph opened up a four point advantage late to win 25-21.
In set three, the Gryphons opened up an early 5-1 lead and held the advantage throughout the middle portion of the set before stretching the lead late and won handily at 25-13.
Guelph was led by Kylen Van Osch (Exeter, Ont.) with 16 points (13 kills, three blocks) followed by Claire Sandor (Waterloo, Ont.) with 13 (10 kills, two blocks, one ace). Libero Megan Canavan (Scarborough, Ont.) led the defence with 32 digs.
