WINDSOR BREAKS OUT OF SLUMP, WHILE TORONTO TAKES SEASON SERIES VERSUS YORK
Led by fourth year guard, Ryan Steer (Windsor, Ontario), the No.7 Windsor Lancers (13-6) bounced back from their three game losing streak to defeat the Western Mustangs (10-9) 78-66 Sunday afternoon at the St. Denis Centre in Windsor. The Lancers regained their shooting touch, and as a team shot .474 (27-57 FG) from the field and .615 (16-26 FT) from the foul line. Steer for Windsor had a game high 23 points shooting an impressive nine-for-12 (.750) from the field. Kevin Kloostra (Chatham, Ontario) contributed with 20 points of his own, while Greg Surmacz (Peterborough, Ontario) scored a double double, pulling down 14 rebounds and 18 points on the night. Bradley Smith (Churchill, Ontario) for Western had a team high 16 points and 13 rebounds. With the win, the Lancers remain tied for first place with the Brock Badgers (13-6). Windsor and Brock face off in the last game of the regular season, which could be the decision maker in the West Division.
Toronto 82, York 70
For the second time this season, the Toronto Varsity Blues defeated the York Lions 82-70. The result drops the Lions to a 12-7 record, while Toronto improves to 12-7. With the sweep of the season series, Toronto takes over sole possession of third place in the OUA east over rivals York.
Five players for the Varsity Blues scored in double figures led by veteran Ben Katz (Toronto, Ontario) who had a game high 26 points on the night, shooting an impressive .909 (10-11 FT) from the line, and .538 (7-13 FG) from the field. York captain Daniel Eves (Barrie, Ontario) had 25 points on the night, but was not enough to push past a determined Varsity Blues squad. Toronto was tough against the glass as they finished the night with 34 rebounds to York’s 23. Toronto also shot a notable .765 from the charity stripe shooting 26-for-34.
