MCMASTER AND GUELPH ADVANCE IN THE WEST, WHILE CARLETON AND OTTAWA GET SET TO FACE OFF IN THE EAST FINAL
The McMaster Marauders played one of their best halves of basketball in the second half of their OUA West men's quarter final playoff game this past Saturday afternoon at the Burridge Gym, downing the Laurier Golden Hawks 85-61. The Marauders, who finished third in the conference in the regular season, and improved to 21-12 overall, advance to Wednesday's OUA West semi-final, where they will face off in St. Catharines against the Brock University Badgers. As he has done all year, senior guard, and conference leading scorer, Martin Ajayi (Hamilton, Ontario) paced McMaster on the scoresheet. In addition to dropping a game high 26 points, Ajayi also added 8 rebounds and 7 assists. Senior forward Adam Steiner (Dundas, Ontario) bounced back from a quiet first half, to contribute a 12 point, 10 rebound double-double. Sophomore guard Jesse MacDonald (Brantford, ON) paced the Golden Hawks with 17 points. Senior forward Trevor Csima (Oakville, Ontario) was a perfect six-for-six from the field, but only attempted one shot in the second half, finishing with 14 points.
Guelph 69 vs Western 61- #4 West vs #5 West
The Guelph Gryphons men’s basketball team continues to roll after defeating the Western Mustangs 69-61 in an OUA Playoff game at the W.F. Mitchell Centre this past Saturday afternoon. After losing thru thirty minutes of play and facing a season-ending loss the Gryphons turned up their defense and outscored the Mustangs by 22-points in the final ten minutes of the second half for the win. Leading the Gryphons offensively was Aron Bariagabre with a game-high 18 points (13 in the second half). Duncan Milne (Calgary, Alberta) continued to impress the fans scoring 16 points which included three dunks. Jason Milliquet (Sarnia, Ontario) and Mattthew Curtis (Hamilton, Ontario) led the Mustangs with 14 points apiece. The Gryphons have won the last seven of eight games and advance to the OUA West semi-final against the Windsor Lancers this Wednesday, February 24 in Windsor.
Carleton 68, York 57- #1 East vs #4 East
The Carleton Ravens defeated the York University Lions, 68-57, to advance to the OUA East Championship Game against arch rival University of Ottawa Gee Gees. The Ravens came out strong, and knew they would face a tough test in the York Lions, who had defeated Carleton in the 2006 OUA East Championship Game, at Carleton last year. The Ravens opened the scoring and never trailed in this close post season contest as they led by 8-points at the half, 31-23. The scoring was spread out for Carleton, led by Stuart Turnbull (Kingston, Ontario) who scored a game high 19-points. Manny Jean Marie (Ottawa, Ontario) added 18-points and Aaron Doornekamp (Odessa, Ontario) and Osvaldo Jeanty (Gloucester, Ontario) each contributed 10-points in the victory. The Lions were led by Dan Eves (Barrie, Ontario) with 17-points and Amde Evans with 14-points in the loss. The Ravens out rebounded York 44 to 26 for the game as 32 of those rebounds were in the defensive end.
Ottawa 69, Toronto 68- #2 East vs #3 East
Alex McLeod (Lindsay, Ontario) drained the game winning free-throw with 54-seconds remaining in regulation time to help lift the Ottawa Gee-Gees to a thrilling 69-68 victory over the University of Toronto Varsity Blues in their OUA East division semifinal this past Saturday. Toronto had a chance to win the game in the final moments of the contest, but Mike DeGiorgio’s (Toronto, Ontario) attempted game-winning shot fell short, thus allowing the Gee-Gees to advance to next Saturday’s OUA East division final against their cross-town rival Carleton University Ravens. Ottawa led by as many as nine points in the second half, but the Blues would not go away, rallying to take the lead (68-67) with 2:14 to play. Curtis Shakespeare (Alliston, Ontario) scored 13, while Josh-Gibson Bascombe (Ottawa, Ontario) added 10 for Ottawa. Mike Williams (Brampton, Ontario) and Ben Katz (Toronto, Ontario) were Toronto’s top point-getters with 18 and 14 points respectively.
