CARLETON AND WINDSOR TO MEET IN WILSON CUP
For the first time in 25 years the No.10 University of Windsor Lancers have won the OUA West Division final defeating the McMaster Marauders 75-58. McMaster came on strong late in the season, but they were no match for the Lancers in this competition. The Marauders hit a three point shot to open the scoring, yet that was the only lead of the game they would see on the night. McMaster endured a lengthy scoring drought late in the first half as the Lancers went on a 13-0 run, to extend their lead to 21, and into the dressing room with a 37-18 half-time lead. McMaster made one final push late in the second half to cut the deficit to 11 points, 56-45, with 8:45 on the clock, but that is as close the Marauders would get, as the Lancers shut down any McMaster momentum, hitting the big shot when it was needed.
Led by Wilson Player of the Game, Kevin Kloostra’s (Chatham, Ontario) game high 20 points, the Lancers saw three players in double digits. Six-foot-eight forward Greg Surmacz (Peterborough, Ontario) was a catalyst with 16 points, while Rich Allen (Chatham, Ontario) had one of his top performances on the year scoring 11 points, eight rebounds on the night. Lancer guard Ryan Steer (Windsor, Ontario) played a hard working, defensive driven final with four big steals on the night, while chipping in eight points and five assists. In their final CIS game for McMaster, Martin Ajayi (Hamilton, Ontario) had a team high 18 points and three steals, while teammate Adam Steiner (Dundas, Ontario) contributed 16 points and nine rebounds.
For Head Coach Chris Oliver it is a return trip to Halifax, for the Lancers it is anything but. For Coach Oliver, it will be his seventh trip to Halifax for the CIS National Championship tournament. During his time as assistant coach to Marauder’s Joe Raso he made the trip to Nova Scotia five times in his six year tenure. He also went east as an assistant coach with the University of Victoria, during his one year stint in British Columbia, while completing his National Coaching Certifications.
Carleton 65 vs Ottawa 63- #1 East vs #2 East
Stuart Turnbull (Kingston, Ontario) drained the game-winning free-throw with three seconds remaining in regulation time as the No.3 Carleton University Ravens downed the No. 5 Ottawa Gee-Gees 65-63 to capture the OUA East Division final before a sell out crowd of 1,500 at the Ravens’ Nest at Carleton University. The Ravens got out to a 14-5 lead by the 6:30 mark of the opening twenty due mainly to poor shooting by the Gee-Gees who went more than five minutes without a basket. Ottawa continued to struggle until the final three and a half minutes of the period when they went on an 11-0 run, including a triple by Donnie Gibson (Kingston, Ontario) at the buzzer to take a 32-39 lead to the break.
Dax Dessureault (Grand Prairie, Alberta) was the leading scorer at half-time with eight points and five rebounds for Ottawa, while Turnbull had seven points and two boards for the Ravens. The teams went back and forth in the early stages of the second half but once again, the Gee-Gees shooting went cold mid-way through the frame. Leading 46-44 with eleven minutes remaining in regulation time, Ottawa went almost another seven minutes without a basket while Carleton went on an 8-0 run. Ottawa tied the game with four minutes to play, but Alex McLeod (Lindsay, Ontario) fouled Osvaldo Jeanty (Gloucester, Ontario) on a three-point attempt sending Jeanty to the line where he drained two of the three free-throws to put the Ravens ahead for good.
Stuart Turnbull had a game high 17 points for the Ravens in the win, while OUA East Most Valuable Player and Wilson Player of the game Osvaldo Jeanty had 11 points and four rebounds in the win. OUA first-team all-star, Josh Gibson-Bascombe (Ottawa, Ontario) scored a team high 15 points in a losing effort.
