CARLETON TAKES A WIN IN A 2007 OUA CHAMPIONSHIP REMATCH, WHILE YORK NARROWLY GETS PAST MCMASTER
The Carleton University Ravens Men's Basketball team defeated the University of Windsor Lancers, 81-73, in front of a packed house at the Carleton University Ravens' Nest. The Ravens improve to 6-0 in the OUA East while Windsor falls to 4-2 in the OUA West.
The game featured Canada's top two CIS programs battling for 40 minutes with the 5-time defending National Champions edging out the defending OUA Champions by 8-points.
The game was fast paced as the Ravens jumped to an early 9-point lead, 20-11 after the first quarter. Over the last three quarters the game was even with each team scoring key baskets to stay in the contest. Windsor twice, once in the third and fourth quarters came within three points, but the Ravens would find a way to keep Windsor from tying the game.
The Ravens were led by the Aaron Doornekamp (Odessa, ON) with a game high 33-point performance and 17-rebounds. Ryan Bell (Ottawa, ON) added 14-points and Stuart Turnbull (Kingston, ON) 11-points and five-assists in the victory.
Four Lancers were in double figures led by Ryan Steer (Windsor, ON) with 21-points. Isaac Kuon (Mississauga, ON) added 16-points, while Greg Surmacz (Peterborough, ON) 13-points and Greg Allin (Chatham, ON) scored 12-points in the loss to Carleton.
The Ravens out rebounded Windsor 47 to 28, holding the Lancers to four offensive boards in the entire game.
York 81, McMaster 78
The York Lions men's basketball team finally got a taste of victory Friday night (Nov. 23) in its fifth game of the season as it defeated the McMaster Marauders 81-78 at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
York (1-4) rallied from an 11-point half-time deficit and showed some grit and determination to pull out the victory. The Lions were led in scoring by the 24 points of star guard Tut Ruach (Brampton, ON), but it wasn't his scoring that brought the Lions back in the game and put them ahead for good.
Ruach was finding his teammates for easy looks and making everyone around him better. Ruach dished out a season-high six assists, and also stepped it up on defence with two blocks and four steals. He made his mark from the free throw line as well, converting on 12 of 14 attempts, and only taking 14 shots from the field.
The Lions also got a solid performance from forward Matthew Terejko (Brantford, ON), who chipped in with a well-rounded 15-point, nine-rebound, five-assist game. The win showed that the Lions can battle back from double digit deficits, but also showed that the team does have potential to make some noise if its plays up to its ability.
McMaster was led by the 17 points and nine rebounds of second-year guard Aminu Bello. The Lions shot 39.1% from the floor in this game, but won the game at the free-throw line, making 21 of 29 second half free throws, and 28 of 38 overall. Mac shot 41.1% from the field.
