YORK WINS BUZZER BEATER IN NCAA EXHIBITION ACTION

York 80, Morehead State Eagles (NCAA) 79

Tut Ruach’s jumper with 3.4 seconds left gave the York Lions a dramatic 80-79 come from-behind victory over the Morehead State Eagles in an NCAA-CIS men’s basketball exhibition game Saturday night (Sept. 1) at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
The point guard (Toronto) led the Lions back from a 22-point deficit in the second half, scoring a game-high 26 points to thrill a boisterous packed house at York.
“I knew if I could get that shot, it would go in,” Ruach said of his running jumper from the top of the key. “Guys just kept playing hard (after the Lions fell behind) and it paid off.”

Ruach’s game-winner came after Morehead State’s Maze Stallworth missed a pair of free throws, setting the stage for a captivating finish.

“We have a lot of young guys, a lot of new guys, and everyone was just hungry,” said Ruach, who also led York with five assists. “We were a little nervous with so many new guys (four Lions made their debuts), but we stepped up.”

Jason Hoult (Uxbridge) and Stefan Haynes (Toronto) chipped in with 10 points apiece for the Lions. Kenneth Faried led Morehead State (Kentucky) with 25 points and 10 rebounds, while Les Simmons added 17 points for the Eagles, who beat the Ryerson Rams 93-69 earlier in the day.

Carleton 83, Alabama Crimson Tide (NCAA) 72

The Carleton University Ravens Men's Basketball team defeated the University of Alabama Crimson Tide, 83-72, in front of 2,000 plus first year students in preseason exhibition basketball this past weekend.

The Ravens played an excellent game at both halves of the court shutting down the powerful Crimson Tide offense while outscoring their NCAA opponents by 9-points in the second half to earn their first NCAA preseason victory of the season.

Carleton came out strong and matched Alabama the entire first half. Carleton went into the intermission with a two-point lead, 36-34. In the second half, spurred on by the crowd of cheering students, the Ravens built a ten point lead at 68-58, midway through the half. Carleton continued to match Alabama basket for basket and would go onto to defeat the Crimson Tide, by 11-points, 83-72.

Carleton was led by Ryan Bell (Ottawa, Ontario) with 15-points. Three other Ravens were in double figures, Stuart Turnbull (Kingston, Ontario) with 11-points and 10-points each for Aaron Doornekamp (Odessa, Ontario) and Manny Jean Marie (Ottawa, Ontario). Jean Marie led the Ravens with 6-total rebounds.

Alonzo Gee (Palm Beach, Florida) led Alabama with a game high 18-point performance. The only other Crimson Tide in double figures was Richard Hendrix (Athens, Georgia) with 14-points and a team high 12-total rebounds. Alabama out rebounded Carleton 37 to 29 for the game.

Brock 106, Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders (NCAA) 90

The Brock University men's basketball team dropped a 106-90 decision to the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders Monday morning at Notre Dame High School in Welland.

The Badgers trailed by 17 at the half 57-40 and brought it within 10 midway through the second half but that was as close as the Badgers would come, as Texas A&M would finish the game shooting 56.9% (37-for-65) from the field and 52.2% from beyond the arc (12-for-23). The Islanders had six players in double-figures led by Kevin Perkins
    who recorded 15 points.

Leading the Badgers was the duo of Niagara Falls natives Brad Rootes and Mike Kemp who combined for 58 Brock points. Rootes finished with a game high 30 points and 10 assists for his second straight double-double. Kemp finished with 28 points with six three-pointers, including 18 points in the second half. Senior forward Owen White
(Port Hope, ON) also recorded in double figures for the third straight game adding 11 points and six rebounds.

Versus the three Division I opponents, the Badgers had four starters in double-figures led by Rootes who led all scorers averaging 23.0 points. 7.1 assists and 5.7 rebounds. White averaged 18.0 points and 6.3 rebounds while Kemp and Scott Murray (Welland, ON) rounded out the Brock leaders averaging 16.0 and 11.7 points per game. The Badgers, one of the top three-point shooting teams in the CIS connected on
33-for-99 from beyond the arc including 16 versus Texas A&M.
